Kelsey Vass, BEd Elementary

Thank you to the generous donors of the Dean of Education Scholarship.  I am honoured to be one of the recipients of this award. The scholarship not only assists me in covering the expenses of post-secondary education and teaching supplies, it also helps motivate me to continue working towards the career goals I have set for myself.

As an alumna of the Faculty of Education, I am thankful for the past year of professional collaboration, tremendous passion, and lifelong relationships.  At UBC, I had the pleasure of participating in the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) cohort, which focuses on supporting learners beyond the classroom by helping develop the skills necessary for them to make responsible decisions and maintain positive relationships. Since completing the program SEL has remained a vested interest of mine and continues to shape my teaching practice. I look forward to further exploring and sharing this passion in an elementary school setting. Thank you again for your generosity and support!

Sam Stiegler, PhD candidate, Curriculum Studies

UBC and the Faculty of Education have provided me with an abundance of support and guidance during the first two years of my doctoral program. The Faculty and students throughout the Faculty and across the university have provided me with critical and nourishing feedback, advice, and inspiration during my studies. The Dean of Education Scholarship provided me the opportunity to attend and present at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, one of the foremost conferences on qualitative research. Not only was I able to present my work in front of many respected qualitative and educational researchers, but I was also able to network with faculty and students from all over the world. These experiences will prove beneficial as I complete my dissertation on the educational experiences of queer and trans-youth and seek out a faculty position upon graduation. Endless thanks to the donors supporting the Dean of Education Scholarship.

Carolyn McEwen, PhD Candidate, Kinesiology

I am writing to thank you for your gift to the Dean of Education Scholarship fund and to personally express my gratitude for your generosity. I am privileged to have the opportunity to complete my doctorate degree at The University of British Columbia where I am mentored by academic leaders in their respective fields. This training will provide me with the necessary skills to be successful in academia.

Receiving the Dean of Education scholarship this past year has allowed me to focus on my research (team selection processes in high performance sport and their impact on athletic and personal development), which is necessary to become an academic leader. In closing, I want to emphasize the impact your contribution as it has enabled me to more fully experience life as a graduate student here at The University of British Columbia. Thank you again for your kind generosity.
