50th Anniversary Artists in Residence Programme
Over the past half century, the Faculty of Education has fostered and promoted the arts as a way to know, to research, to learn, to communicate, and to inspire. Indeed, as educators, we believe that everyone has inestimable gifts for learning creatively, and that creative approaches are essential to learning. To honour the Faculty’s contributions to creative learning, the Faculty is sponsoring six artists in residence as follows:

Mathematical Sculpture
George Hart, a sculptor and mathematician from Stony Brook, New York, will work with secondary mathematics teacher candidates to develop a geometric sculpture project on a mathematical theme that can be replicated by students and teachers in secondary classrooms. Website: www.georgehart.com

My Life as a Zimbabwean Sculptor
Dominic Benhura, a Shona sculptor from Zimbabwe, will give presentations to teacher education students in the arts-based cohorts and at two events planned for elementary and secondary students - workshops for young gifted artists at UBC and for students in the University Transition Program. |

Collaborative Murals: Teaching from the Heart
Richard Tetrault, a painter and printmaker from Vancouver, will be spending one week with the secondary art methods students producing one to two large murals for the Scarfe Building that will address social justice issues. The Drama of Process: Reflections on Playwriting

African Drumming: Workshop

Yield: Altered Organic Sculptors
Jim Maunder, a sculptor from Newfoundland, will work with student teachers as part of their curriculum and instruction courses in science and art education to explore cycles in nature through the design of earthworks. Visual archives of the earthwork pieces will be posted on the Faculty of Environmental Education Caucus website (www.educ.ubc.ca/ee) as part of a bulletin board discussion about sustainability and Earth Cycles.
