Update on Faculty Searches

Head, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)

After reviewing feedback from candidate interviews in January, the Advisory Committee for the next ECPS Department Head declined to recommend either candidate to the Dean. The Dean has accepted the Committee’s decision, and the position will be re-advertised with no changes.

In the interim, a Head pro tem is being sought for the term July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

Director, School of Kinesiology (KIN)

Dean Frank is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Boushel as the new Director of the School of Kinesiology. Dr. Boushel will begin his five-year term on July 1, 2015.

Head, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

Dean Frank has commenced the process for the formation of the Advisory Committee for the search for the next Head of the Department of EDCP. This appointment is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2016. The deadline for nominations of Faculty to serve on the committee was Friday, March 27th, 2015.

Update on External Reviews

Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, & Special Education (ECPS)

The academic review of ECPS was held February 4-6. The report from external reviewers was received February 22, and the final report including Head’s comments was sent to the Department on March 24. ECPS’s response and Strategic Plan are to be developed at a department retreat on April 9.

Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

Factual errors in the report were corrected January 5, and an initial response was submitted by EDCP on February 5. Strategic Plan development will be the focus of a department retreat on May 20.

Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED)

The LLED academic review is complete. A 6-month follow-up meeting on the progress of the Strategic Plan will be held April 30.

School of Kinesiology (KIN)

The report from the external reviewers has been received, and the School is working on their response. The response deadline has been extended to April 15, per the Dean.

Dr. Steve Cardwell, Director, Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELP)

As Director, Dr. Cardwell will oversee the new Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELP), which is anticipated to launch in July 2015. Formerly the Superintendent and CEO of the Vancouver School Board, Dr. Cardwell joined the Faculty on March 1, 2015.

President’s Breakfast

On January 22, the Dean attended the President’s Breakfast, where the theme for discussion was, “What does it mean for a university to act in the public interest?”

Dean Frank met with TD Canada Trust on January 28 to discuss potential collaborations, finishing up with a tour of the new Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons site.

Wall Associate Dinner Forum
Sexuality and the Interdisciplinary Imagination: An evening of concerts and conversation
On January 28, Dr. Frank presented the talk, “Sports, looks, and a woman; that’s what every guy needs to be masculine,” as part of the Wall Associate Dinner Forum, “Sexuality and the Interdisciplinary Imagination: An evening of concerts and conversation.”

On January 29, the Dean attended the Ministry of Education’s “BC Focus on Learning: Rising to the Global Challenge” forum at the Morris J. Wosk Center for Dialogue.

At the most recent Faculty Conversations gathering, held January 29, Dean Frank facilitated a discussion on “Ethical engagement in a ‘globally-influential university.'”

On February 5, Dr. Frank hosted a High Tea event for Faculty of Education alumni at the Eaglequest Coyote Creek Golf Club in Surrey, BC.

Association of British Columbia Deans of Education Meeting
Dr. Frank attended the February 6 meeting of the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE), where representatives of the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) were in attendance as guests.

Dean Frank met the new Vancouver School Board (VSB) Chair, Christopher Richardson, at a luncheon held with VSB trustees on February 10th.

CampOUT Recognition Celebration

On February 11, Dr. Frank attended a recognition celebration for supporters of CampOUT, an empowering outdoor summer camp for BC’s queer, trans, two-spirit and allied youth ages 14-21.

On March 2, UBC President Arvind Gupta hosted a Deans’ Retreat at St. John’s College, where Dr. Frank and the other Deans of UBC spent the day in conversation with Professor Gupta discussing strategic priorities.

The International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) was held for the first time in Canada on March 29/30 in Banff, Alberta, where Dean Frank attended as President of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE), and also represented the Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE).
