Deanna Kayne, Manager of Alumni Engagement

As Manager of Alumni Engagement, Deanna is responsible for engaging Faculty of Education alumni through local, national, and global alumni events and communications, building connections with University-wide alumni initiatives, and coordinating the Faculty’s Alumni Award nominations and recognition. Deanna joined the Development and Alumni Engagement team on November 27.

Ayaz Mahmood, Finance Manager

Ayaz Mahmood manages the Faculty of Education’s Finance Office, and is responsible for budgets/Hyperion, payables audit, and query resolution. Ayaz previously held the position of Administrative Coordinator in the School of Kinesiology, and joined the Finance team fulltime as Finance Manager on January 5.

Dean Frank and the Advisory Committee for the next ECPS Department Head welcomed two candidates for interviews in January:

  • Dr. Brent Mallinckrodt, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Tennessee,met with members of the Faculty and Department on January 12-13.
  • Dr. Kurt Geisinger, Director of the Buros Center for Testing and Meierhenry Distinguished University Professor at the University of Nebraska, met with members of the Faculty and Department on January 19-20.

BC Focus on Learning Forum

On January 29, the Dean attended the Ministry of Education’s “BC Focus on Learning: Rising to the Global Challenge” forum at the Morris J. Wosk Center for Dialogue.

Vancouver School Board Luncheon

February 10, 2015
Dean Frank met the new Vancouver School Board (VSB) Chair, Christopher Richardson, at a luncheon held with VSB trustees on February 10th.

CampOUT Recognition Celebration

February 11, 2015
On February 11, Dr. Frank attended a recognition celebration for supporters of CampOUT, an empowering outdoor summer camp for BC’s queer, trans, two-spirit and allied youth ages 14-21.

Dean Frank attended and provided opening remarks for The Canadian Association of Curriculum Studies (CACS) 7th Biennial Provoking Curriculum Studies Conference on February 20/21 on UBC’s Vancouver campus.

Accord Info Session – Initial Teacher Education

On February 23, the Dean hosted a 90-minute information session on the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE) Accord on Initial Teacher Education, led by Dr. Wendy Carr, Director of Teacher Education.

On February 24, Dr. Frank joined 1,000 UBC alumni and friends at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the 17th Annual Thunderbird Millennium Breakfast fundraiser.

Deans’ Retreat

March 2, 2015
On March 2, UBC President Arvind Gupta hosted a Deans’ Retreat at St. John’s College, where Dr. Frank and the other Deans of UBC spent the day in conversation with Professor Gupta discussing strategic priorities.

EDCP 2014-2015 Seminar Series

On March 13, Dr. Frank presented the lecture, “A Tangle of Trouble: Boys, Men and Masculinities,” as part of the EDCP 2014-2015 Seminar Series: International Perspectives in Curriculum and Pedagogy.

On March 20, Dean Frank offered opening remarks for the 2nd Annual EDCP Graduate Student (EGS) Conference, speaking to this year’s theme, “Exploring the Spaces within Education: Learning In, With and About Education.”

Dr. Frank joined attendees from across UBC at the March 20 Rule Out Racism Week Feature Event, “Academic Freedom of Expression and the Impact on Students,” which included panelist Dr. Annette Henry, Professor, Department of Language & Literacy Education.

On March 24, the Dean hosted a 90-minute information session on the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE) Accord on Research in Education, led by Dr. Beth Haverkamp, Associate Dean, Graduate Programs and Research.

International Summit on the Teaching Profession

March 29-30, 2015
The International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) was held for the first time in Canada on March 29/30 in Banff, Alberta, where Dean Frank attended as President of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE), and also represented the Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE).

Breakfast with the Dean

On March 31, Dean Frank hosted, “Breakfast with the Dean: What’s innovation got to do with it?” at St. John’s College, where Dr. Pam Ratner facilitated a conversation with faculty, staff and students about the place of innovation in the Faculty and the University.

University Hill Secondary

Dean Frank, Dr. Wendy Carr, and Dr. Steve Cardwell met with University Hill Secondary adminstrators, Steve Cameron and Jagruti Desai, on March 31 to discuss school-Faculty collaboration/innovation.

Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, & Special Education (ECPS)

February 4, 2015

The academic review of ECPS was held February 4-6. The report from external reviewers was received February 22, and the final report including Head’s comments was sent to the Department on March 24. ECPS’s response and Strategic Plan are to be developed at a department retreat on April 9.

Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

January 5, 2015

Factual errors in the report were corrected January 5, and an initial response was submitted by EDCP on February 5. Strategic Plan development will be the focus of a department retreat on May 20.

Dr. Steve Cardwell, Director, Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELP)

March 1, 2015

As Director, Dr. Cardwell will oversee the new Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELP), which is anticipated to launch in July 2015. Formerly the Superintendent and CEO of the Vancouver School Board, Dr. Cardwell joined the Faculty on March 1, 2015.

President’s Breakfast

On January 22, the Dean attended the President’s Breakfast, where the theme for discussion was, “What does it mean for a university to act in the public interest?”

Meeting with TD Canada Trust

January 28, 2015

Dean Frank met with TD Canada Trust on January 28 to discuss potential collaborations, finishing up with a tour of the new Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons site.

Wall Associate Dinner Forum

On January 28, Dr. Frank presented the talk, “Sports, looks, and a woman; that’s what every guy needs to be masculine,” as part of the Wall Associate Dinner Forum, “Sexuality and the Interdisciplinary Imagination: An evening of concerts and conversation.”
