Dr. Frank hosted the graduation ceremony for the 2-week teacher development program for the Zhejiang provincial Department of Education this past Friday. The Dean presented each graduating student with a certificate and celebrated their achievements and hoped all the best in the future!

Dr. Frank hosted lunch for Dr. Suzanne Scott and Mrs. Roberta Beiser as a thank you for Mrs. Beiser's continued donor contribution to the Faculty of Education. Through the Edith Lando Charitable Foundation, Mrs. Roberta Beiser continues her mother, Edith Lando's, legacy of helping local community activities such as the Parent Teachers Association to Canadian Mental Health believing that "each child is born with possibilities and promise […] I want to do what I can to ensure that every child has a chance at life."

On November 28, 2018, the Dean attended the Fall 2018 Convocation ceremonies of our most recent undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. Over 550 students crossed the stage at the Telus Chan Centre for Performing Arts to collect their Diplomas and Degrees from the Faculty of Education. Congratulation to all of our graduates; we wish them all the best of luck as they move into careers and continued studies!

The Dean attends a Dean’s Council Meeting for UBC-Okanagan

Dr. Frank met with the other UBC-Okanagan Deans as part of the Advisory Council to the Provost. The mandate of the Council is to provide a forum for discussing academic issues such as program development, enhancing the academic infrastructure, etc. The council provides advice to the Provost on issues relating to teaching and research at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus.

Dr. Frank attends the dinner to celebrate and congratulate Dr. Philip Steenkamp on his appointment as President and Vice – Chancellor of Royal Roads University. Dr. Frank and other esteemed guests joined Professor Santa J. Ono, as he hosted and congratulated Dr. Steenkamp on his new position.
Dr. Philip Steenkamp has been UBC’s Vice – President, External Relations, since 2015 and has made significant contributions to UBC including the development of the university’s new strategic plan, ongoing support for the UBC Learning Exchange, and the launch of a strategy to secure a rapid transit line to the Vancouver campus.

The Dean met with Dr. Bryce Traister, Dean in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies UBC-Okanagan

Dr. Frank caught up with Dr. Bryce Traister, Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC-Okanagan, as he was visiting Vancouver from the UBC-Okanagan campus.

Dr. Bryce Traister was appointed as Dean for a five year term at the beginning of August 2017. Dr. Traister is an accomplished scholar, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and a PhD in English from UC Berkeley. His research interests span a wide range of topics in cultural studies – from transnationalism and globalization to early American religious culture.

The Dean attends the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education Meeting

Dr. Frank attended the annual general meeting for the Association of British Columbia of Deans of Education at Simon Fraser University. Along with the other Deans from the universities within British Columbia, the all-day event discussed several topics ranging from Indigenous Education, SOGI initiatives at UBC, and ABCDE Awards for 2019.

The ABCDE is a cohort of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education, comprised of Deans, Directors, or Chairs of BC Faculties, Schools, Colleges, or Departments of Education committed to pan-Canadian leadership in professional and teacher education, educational research, and policy in universities and university-colleges.

Dr. Frank and members of the Faculty of Education attended the alumni UBC’s 2018 Alumni Achievement Awards and supported one of our own alumna, Dr. Kathryn Shoemaker, as well as other members of the UBC Community.

The alumni UBC Achievement Awards recognize the recipients at a formal celebration as an opportunity to give thanks to their contributions to UBC, cultivate development and alumni engagement prospects, acknowledge key volunteers, steward alumni and donors, engage new volunteers, and thank recipients and key guests.

Dr. Frank met with visiting scholars from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, Dr. Alan Ovens and Dr. Dawn Garbett as their work in teacher education and intimate scholarship methodologies has aided in Dr. Joy Butler's work, and project titled: 'Transforming practice through intimate research.' The visiting scholars presented their seminar on Friday November 16, 2018 titled: Transforming your practice through self-study: Tales of experience.

The Dean met with Tim McGeer to discuss UBC’s continued support of Mental Health Literacy in Education

Dr. Frank, Dr. Carr, and Ms. Tomlinson met with Mr. McGeer, Principal of University Hill Secondary School, to continue with the University’s promise of maintaining the relationship between UBC and University Hill Secondary School and their partnership of supporting mental health initiatives in education. As special request from the UBC President’s Office, the meeting consisted of communicating what the Faculty of Education is doing to teach mental health and mental health literacy in their Teacher Education programs.

Dr. Frank starts the Faculty’s search for the next Associate Dean, Research

November 13 – 15, 2018

The Dean met with faculty members interested in the Associate Dean, Research position as news of Dr. Mark Beauchamp’s departure from the Faculty at the end of June 2019 was released at the beginning of this month. Dr. Beauchamp led the Office of Research in Education since 2016 and in this year alone, has increased the Faculty of Education’s research dollars by 19 per cent.

Dr. Blye Frank hosted a reception to meet and welcome Lieutenant – General Romeo Dallaire to UBC and to , provide our Faculty of Education’s core alumni and donors to the Centre for Group Counselling & Trauma an opportunity to meet the Honourable Dallaire, and share information about UBC’s Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma.

Lieutenant General, the Honourable Romeo Dallaire, visited to speak about the War-Related Trauma Stress Injuries symposium: Lessons Learned Across Time. His presentation delved into the topics of post-traumatic stress disorder and various supports for Veterans. The Faculty of Education is proud to announce a partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada to create a Veterans Transition Training Hub at UBC. The Veterans Affairs Canada investment of $250,000 builds on large private funds already contributed to support the training of clinicians working on the front-line of helping Veterans in Canada.

The Dean hosted his bi-annual External Advisory Board meeting Thursday night with guest presenters Dr. Wendy Carr and Dr. Stan Kutcher focusing on the topic of Mental Health Literacies.

The objective of the External Advisory Board is to provide advice, support and assistance to the Dean and the Faculty relating to the activities of the Faculty of Education and the strategic direction for the Faculty. The scope of the objective includes the academic and professional programs, the relationship of the Faculty with the business and public sector communities, alumni relations and development activities.

Dr. Frank served as University Examiner for the final doctoral examination of a PhD candidate. Along with other members of the Examination Committee, including fellow faculty member, Dr. Donal O'Donoghue, this meeting was the final review process and oral defense of the PhD candidate.

The Dean meets Visiting Elder Larry Grant

Dr. Frank met with visiting Musqueam Elder, Larry Grant, to discuss advancing Indigenous priorities in the field of education. Larry Grant, Musqueam Leader, will be visiting the Faculty on November 5 and 21. Larry was born and raised in Musqueam traditional territory by a traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam family. After 4 decades as a tradesman, Larry enrolled in the First Nations Languages Program, which awoke his memory of the embedded value that the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language has to self-identity, kinship, culture, territory, and history prior to European contact.

Dr. Frank, Dr. Bryson, and Dr. Thorne make up the committee for a PhD candidate in the Department of Language and Literacy Education. This meeting was to review the student’s data chapters in their dissertation and begin the defense process.
