Shared Learnings
Description:
Shared Learnings: Integrating BC Aboriginal Content K-10 is designed to provide teachers with guidance in integrating Aboriginal topics in all subject areas at an introductory level.

The first section of the guide includes the rationale, key concepts, information on planning a program and protocols and suggestions for working with the Aboriginal community. The main portion is divided into three color coded sections for primary, K-3; junior, 4-7 and intermediate, 8-10. A one or two page layout of each subject area and grade or grade combination will include 1. shared learnings ( information ALL students should know about BC Aboriginal peoples ), 2. instructional strategies, 3. links to IRP Prescribed Learning Outcomes and 4. resources. Also included in each layout is teaching tips and helpful facts. The appendix includes a glossary, assessment and evaluation suggestions, lists of resources ( provincially recommended, locally developed and internet sites) and sample lesson plans.

contains an index for topics including Diabetes, Fetal Alcohol Synrome and
other health related issues as well.

Health Canada: Modern Foods and Nutrition with a First Nations and Inuit Focus
This is a very valuable website presented by Health Canada which will lead you
to a Nutrition Labelling Toolkit for First Nations and Inuit People which
assists Aboriginal people to make sense of the non-traditional foods they are
faced with and has a very comprehensive Questions and Answers Sheet hyperlink
which answers questions about nutritional questions regarding the safety and
nutrition of food today.

Centre for Indigenous' Nutrition and Environment
CINE stands for Centre for Indiginous Peoples’ Nutrition and Environment and is
a university-based research and education resource for Indigenous Peoples,
created by Canada's Aboriginal Leaders. The site focuses on the question of
cultural benefits of traditional food.

McGill University: Careers in Nutrition and the Environment

Also for modern approaches to Nutritional requirements and the need to
integrate traditional foods as much as possible.

The Ethnography of Lewis and Clark: Native American Objects and the American Quest for Commerce and Science
Corn

1804: Lewis and Clark documented agricultural practices of the Mandan, Hidatsa
and Arikara people whom they encountered and who shared it with them, enabling
them to get through the winter they spent with the people as their meat
supplies were exhausted. There is one great picture of coloured Native corn from the Fort Berthold
Reservation, now known as the Three Affiliated Tribe Reservation.

Turtle Island Native Network: Culture
This site is about traditional and contemporary native people’s culture with a
focus on traditional food. The website is loaded with lots of good tasting
recipes and First Nations information.

The Native Way Cookbook: Cookbook of the Grandmothers

The Native Way Cookbook is a recipe index which includes traditional and
contemporary recipes and is broken into categories, allowing you to find
recipes by type of dish and also by tribe or nation.

Bannock Awareness

Kamloops Forest region developed this website to celebrate National Aboriginal
Day. The site is packed with information to build your awareness of First
Nations while you eat.

The Food Museum
The FOOD Museum website is the one stop source for food exhibits, news/issues,
resources, food history, answers to your food questions, book reviews and just
plain fun.
