Rob Tierney was honoured by staff at a breakfast farewell held on January 28th at the University Golf Club. More than 60 staff shared fond memories of Rob's leadership over the past decade. Susanne Schmiesing, Director of Finance and Administration, presented Rob with a staff photo montage and wished him all the best in his new role as Dean of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney, Australia on behalf of all the staff.

Rob Tierney has decided to step down as Dean of the Faculty of Education at the end of February to assume the role as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work, at the University of Sydney, Australia, March 1st 2010.

Following consultation with members of the Faculty’s leadership team and members of the University’s executive, a recommendation to appoint Dr. Jon Shapiro as Dean pro tem was forwarded to the President. The Board of Governors approved the appointment of Dr. Jon Shapiro as Dean pro tem, effective March 1, 2010 until a new Dean takes office.

Anna Kindler has been selected as the United States Society for Education through Art, 2009 "International Ziegfeld Award" recipient. The award will be given during the USSEA/InSEA Luncheon on April 20, 2009 at the National Art Education Association Conference in Minneapolis, MN.

Congratulations to Dr. Jo-Anne Dillabough, Department of Educational Studies, who will assume responsibilities for the David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education beginning May 1, 2010.

Dr. Dillabough has been honoured as a Killam Fellow in Canada, a Spencer Fellow in the U.S., a UBC Early Career Scholar with the Peter Wall institute for Advanced Studies, and a Noted Scholar with Flasco, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Social Sciences Institute, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Advisory Committee considered Dr. Dillabough's focus on urban, multiracial youth subculture to be an area of contemporary multicutural studies with particular relevance to education. In recomending her appointment, the committee also noted...

Dr. Donal O'Donoghue was awarded the Manuel Barkan Memorial Award for his outstanding article in the National Art Education Association (USA) Journal, Studies in Art Education. His award recognizes his single authored 2009 article entitled: "Are we asking the wrong questions in arts-based research?" Donal will receive his award at the upcoming NAEA convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

If you came to the Staff Christmas Party, it's highly probable that you would have left with a candle and a full tummy. Candles were the gift of choice for the secret santa steal-a-thon and the potluck was, yet again, a dizzying display of delicious delicacies. The staff from Computing and Media Services were this year's event organisers and odds on favourite for a repeat performance next year! Susanne Schmiesing, Director of Finance and Administration, thanked all staff for all their hard work throughout the year.  But all we want to know is, who ended up with the lottery tickets?
