Donald Rix, generous benefactor of the Faculty's Eleanor Rix Professorship in Rural Education, passes away Nov 6th
November 9, 2009

Donald Rix, Clinical Assistant Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine 1999, passed away on Friday 6 November 2009. Dr. Rix received an honorary degree (LL.D.) from UBC in May 2006. He began his long career in medicine as a general practitioner and became an enthusiastic supporter of youth, education, the arts and entrepreneurship. Dr. Rix was a founder and chairman of MDS Metro (now LifeLabs), chairman of the B.C. Innovation Council, chairman of Genome B.C. and a member of the Premier's Technology Council.

Last May, Rix and daughter Laurie Macrae donated $2.5 million to the Faculty of Education to create a professorship...

Dr. Ian Franks was inducted into the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the 79th Annual Meeting of AAKPE during an induction ceremony held on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Catamaran Resort and Spa in San Diego, California. Dr. Ian Franks is a Professor at the School of Human Kinetics.

Great-West Life's Gift to UBC's Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Master's Program

Great-West Life has made a generous commitment of $120,000 over three years in support of the UBC Faculty of Education’s Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s (MRVC) program on-line.

 “As an industry leader with extensive experience in understanding the barriers experienced by persons with disabilities, Great-West Life will be a valued partner in helping shape the UBC MVRC program on-line,” says Faculty of Education Dean Rob Tierney.

 The UBC MVRC program on-line is a nationally accessible, internet-based Master’s program aimed at filling the gap in Canadian magisterial-level education in the field of vocational rehabilitation.

John Willinsky receives honorary doctorate from SFU
October 5, 2009

Congratulations to John Willinsky, Department of Language and Literacy Education, who will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws by the Faculties of Education and Science from Simon Fraser University on Friday, October 9, 2009, 2:30 pm, recognizing his pioneering contribution to 'open access' to research through the Public Knowledge Project, which has created free online publishing systems that continue to increase the global sharing of research. John will give a convocation address at this event.

Raise-a-Reader Sets Higher Sights

This year’s Raise-a-Reader campaign is just a little more significant than in the past. That’s because of an added initiative to support literacy development for children who are visually impaired.

The Early Literacy Project for Young Children with Visual Impairments is a public-private partnership in which community organizations and leaders join with UBC Faculty of Education professors Dr. Cay Holbrook and Dr. Kim Zebehazy to address the literacy issues for preschoolers who are blind or visually impaired.
