Associate Dean of Teacher Education, Dr. Rita Irwin, is spearheading a "re-imagining" of the current teacher education program for the Faculty of Education through a Faculty based program committee and a continuous process of consultation within and outside the Faculty.

The project entitled "CREATE" (Community to Re-imagine Educational Alternatives for Teacher Education) is meant to inspire innovations in teacher education at UBC.

We are very pleased to announce that Tony Clarke, Professor in EDCP, is being awarded this year's 3M Teaching Fellowship. This award is recognized as Canada's most prestigious teaching award. Established in 1986 by 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE), these Fellowships are open to Canadian university teachers from all disciplines. Up to 10 fellowships are presented each year to recognize exceptional achievements and contributions by teacher-scholars.

Dr. Mark Aquash, Assistant Professor in EDST, has been awarded a three-year, $173,00 SSHRC Aboriginal Research Pilot Program grant to support his project entitled "The Circle of Knowledge".

This project is a partnership with the Walpole Island First Nation in Southern Ontario that seeks to build an effective group oriented, community-based circle of knowledge program that will reinforce Anishinaabe identity and language fluency. The study will focus on contributing to the much-needed information and literature addressing fluency issues in this First Nation community.

The School of Human Kinetics has launched a centre that will help future host regions learn from Canada's experience hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
 
Building on UBC's research expertise in sustainability, social development and health, the new UBC Centre for Sport and Sustainability will study the opportunities and impacts of sport and mega sporting events.
 
The centre's mandate will be to make findings available to event organizers, sponsors and host communities around the globe to help maximize the social, economic and environmental benefits of large sporting events and to reduce negative impacts.

Associate Professor Jan Hare has been awarded a grant from the federal government to provide culturally-sensitive literacy training for early childhood educators in Aboriginal urban and northern communities across BC.

The Government of Canada has committed $283,625 over three years from the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills. In partnership with the Aboriginal Head Start Association of British Columbia (AHSBC), this grant will enable Hare to develop a curriculum for staff and early childhood educators engaged in designing, implementing and evaluating Aboriginal family literacy programs.

Congratulations to Linda Siegel, Professor, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, for being awarded the 2010 Canadian Psychological Association Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Canadian Psychology.
