This year’s Faculty of Education Fall Faculty Career Development Workshops Series included a discussion on the rise of open access publishing with Dr. Judith Daniluk, Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education, Faculty of Education, Leonora Crema, Scholarly Communications Librarian, Jo-Anne Naslund and Wendy Traas, UBC Education Library, and Amber Saundry, cIRcle, UBC Library.
With some publishers requiring authors to pay exorbitant fees as a way to finance their journals, several questions arise: Should scholars pay such fees? Are they legitimate research expenses? What are the best publishing outlets for your research? The discussion explored key strategies and UBC Library resources available to identify top journals and reputable publishers, as well as journal impact factors, indexing, peer review, publication frequency, open access, author rights and self-archiving.
