TIMELINE: The UBC Global Minds Challenge opens October 24th, 2009 and closes December 19th, 2009. Winning submissions will be announced on February 5th, 2010.
ELIGIBILITY: The UBC Global Minds Challenge is open to public and independent K-12 schools everywhere in the world. Project submissions may be in English or French, and should be:
- original, exciting, and pedagogically significant applications of learning technologies in a K-12 school context; and
- inspirational to a theme of sport, culture, sustainability, and/or global citizenship (focusing on indigenous and aboriginal education, internationalism, equality, social justice and inclusion).
Note: Please ensure that you have obtained the consent and approval of people depicted in the content for submission!
JUDGING: A distinguished, international panel of judges will look for projects that exemplify one or more of the following:
- pedagogically effective means for remote participation in the 2010 Winter Games;
- the ability to promote meaningful learning and engage broad participation;
- the ability to inspire and transform learners, teachers and schools everywhere;
- the creativity and originality of the educational tools and design; and
- the collective involvement of the school, community and home.
EXAMPLES: Some ideas for projects from classrooms, schools and their communities might be:
- a classroom creates a Twitter channel about the experience of Paralympic athletes;
- a teacher uses open source tools to connect with the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays;
- a school uses mobile phones and the Internet to foster community-scaled sustainability;
- a classroom creates a social web learning quest to explore Mayan culture;
- a set of international schools connects online to share their ideas about global citizenship;
- a YouTube video is created of aboriginal student discussions about Truce;
- a group of special needs students constructs its own space in Second Life.
SUBMISSION: Joining the UBC Global Minds Challenge takes three easy steps:
- Post the details of your project on VANOC's 2010 Winter Games Education Project Submission page by December 19th, 2009.
- Insert "Global Minds Challenge" in the Project Description box so that it will be identified as part of this challenge and differentiated from other competition submissions when posted on the Featured Showcase site.
- Once your project is posted, email us at global.minds@ubc.ca with your name and the project title. You’re entered!
