This art series entitled, Canadian Viewpoints: Concealed and Revealed, is a creative synthesis of a three-year study entitled, O Canada! Reimagining Canadian Identity: A Cosmopolitan Approach to Teaching and Learning, funded by The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
As an artist-in-residence, Natalie LeBlanc worked with students, faculty, and co-investigators in the teacher education program at the University of British Columbia; with elementary students at Trudeau Elementary School operating within the Vancouver School Board; and through an on-line platform eliciting broader community involvement and participation. This body of work brings together a range of work produced within these platforms. It combines Natalie’s own studio practice involving painting, photography and printmaking with documentations of several pedagogical events using experimental sound, video and digital projections.
This work reveals some of the complexity of being Canadian during and post Canada 150, a time of introspection and retrospection. It invites viewers to deliberate some of the aesthetic, dialogic and performative versions of contemporary Canadian lived experience related to issues around representations of individual and collective identities.
Natalie LeBlanc is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher working with paint, photography, printmaking, textiles, and digital technologies through a wide range of artistic processes and practices. She is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia in Curriculum Studies, specializing in Art Education. While maintaining her studio practice, Natalie has taught art and media technologies at the secondary and postsecondary levels as well as in various community settings in Canada. She has received awards from the Canadian Society of Education through Art and the American Educational Research Association and she has presented her artistic research with communities of scholars in Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States. Her artistic practice is concerned with examining the pedagogical potential of contemporary art and the intersections between art making, philosophy and research.
