The Dean attends the Reception for Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards Recipients

The Dean attended the reception for the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards early Monday evening. As one of six Killam institutions, the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes 16 individuals that demonstrate excellence in teaching. This year, Kay Hare of the department of Language and Literacy Education, and Ben Hives of the School of Kinesiology were recognized as award recipients.

The Dean attends VOX: An Evening in Support of Vancouver Opera Association’s Young Artists

The Dean attended a night of discovering the next generation of Canadian opera talents at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Friday. An evening of competition and musical celebration, Dr. Frank was surrounded by remarkable talents and performances from eight young singers selected in a nation-wide search.

The Dean travels to Kelowna to attend OSE Faculty meetings and UBCO Senate

Dr. Frank and Dr. Bryson travelled to Kelowna, BC to attend several Okanagan School of Education Faculty meetings, and celebrate the approval of the OSE Bachelor of Education Program on Thursday. The Dean also attended UBCO Senate while in Kelowna. As Dean of the Okanagan School of Education, Dr. Frank travels to the Okanagan on a recurring basis to ensure that the OSE adheres to the same principles and protocols as the UBC Vancouver Faculty of Education.

Dr. Frank met with other Deans for their Committee of Deans’ meeting in the Old Administration Building on Wednesday. As part of the UBC’s Academic Strategic Plan, the Deans from several of the university’s Faculties meet once every month.

The Dean attends Peter Wanyenya’s Celebration of Life

The Dean attended UBC PhD student, Peter Wanyenya’s celebration of life on the Tuesday, following the Easter long weekend. Peter was a student in the Med in Human Development, Learning and Culture (ECPS) from 2010 – 2012, after which he because his PhD in Gender, Race, and Social Justice. Peter served as a program advisor for over 90 undergraduate students in the UBC International Scholars Program, provided support to the UBC World University Service of Canada Local Committee and Student Refugee Program, and co-managed the UBC Really? Campaign, which promotes intercultural understanding and respect for diversity on campus. Our condolences to all who know Peter; may his memory be a blessing.

The Dean hosts Dining with the Dean: Mental Health Literacy

Dr. Frank hosted a Dining with the Dean event on the Tuesday night following Easter weekend. The Dean, along with several members of the Faculty of Education Mental Health Literacy portfolio and prominent figures of Mental Health Education in Greater Vancouver came together to engage in discussions about the transformative work being done in the Faculty and beyond.
As part of the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, Mental Health Literacy is a core objective of the Faculty’s goal to enhance the wellness of all members by promoting and building a supportive culture that fosters relationships, connections, and resiliency.

The Dean attends dinner with the Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma and Partnership Afghanistan Canada

The Dean attended dinner with the Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma and Partnership Afghanistan Canada this past Friday to prepare for their trip to Kabul later next month. The dinner brought the two groups together for the first time and allowed for introductions and discussions with the Dean.

The Dean attends the Parallaxic Book Launch, and Q&A Session

Dr. Frank attended the Parallaxic Praxis book launch of the Faculty’s Alumni, Dr. Pauline Sameshima, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Arts Integrated Studies and Dr. Sean Weibe, Associate Professor.

Parallaxic Praxis is a research framework utilized by interdisciplinary teams to collect, interpret, transmediate, analyze, and mobilize data generatively. The methodology leverages the researchers’ personal strengths and the collective expertise of the team including the participants and community when possible.

The Dean hosts the second of two Dean’s External Advisory Board meetings of the 2018-2019 year

The Dean hosted his bi-annual External Advisory Board meeting Thursday night with guest presenters Dr. Marvin Westwood and Mr. Tim Laidler, who discussed the Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma and the Veterans Transition Network.

The External Advisory Board provides advice, support, and assistance to the Dean and the Faculty relating to the activities and strategic directions of the Faculty of Education. The mandate includes academic and professional programs, the relationship of the Faculty with the business and public sector communities, alumni relations, and development activities.

The Dean introduces Dr. Lance McCready for the SOGI UBC Public Talk

Dr. Frank welcomed Dr. Lance McCready to UBC as the guest speaker for the SOGI UBC Public Talk “Exploring Barriers to Post-Secondary Access Facing Black Queer Youth: Beyond What Are Given as Givens.”

The lunch hour provided a space for Dr. McCready to share his work with black queer youth in Toronto focusing on the experiences of queer and trans identifying young Black women. Dr. McCready asks us to consider ways in which individuals, schools and community organizations can better support racialized sexual and gender minority youth access post-secondary education (PSE) as part of their plans or lifelong learning and employment.

The Dean participates in the EDG Network Webinar

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada’s Resource Group on Equity, Diversity, and Gender (EDG) asked Dr. Frank and Dr. Carr to participate in the EDG Network’s webinar this past Sunday. They were invited to speak about UBC’s initiatives, funding, and how the Faculty might be helpful in advancing the idea of a national LGBT competency based curriculum for medical students.

The Dean attends the 20th HSE April International Academic Conference on Education in Moscow, Russia

Dr. Frank Dr. Carr attended the National Research University Higher School of Economics’ 20th April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development in Moscow, Russia this past week.
This academic conference provides a platform for discussion of important issues that the country faces in the languages of science and academic research.

The Dean attends the American Educational Research Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada

Dr. Frank attended the American Education Research Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada this past week. Within the Annual Meeting, Dr. Frank hosted several events including, Making Canada Great for Kids – Featuring UNICEF’s David Morely, and alumni UBC’s annual AERA Alumni and Friends Reception.
Based in the multicultural city of Toronto, the 2019 Annual Meeting’s theme of ‘Leveraging Education Research in a “Post-Truth” Era,’ the meeting gave attendees an opportunity to explore how our work can help overcome the challenges of our time.

The Dean attends the reception in honour of the 2018-2019 Premier Undergraduate and Wesbrook Scholars

Dr. Frank and Dr. Boushel attended the reception in honour of the 2018-2019 Premier Undergraduate Wesbrook Scholars at the Norman MacKenzie House this past Wednesday. This year, Andrew Au of the School of Kinesiology is the award recipient of the Carl Bradford Robertson Scholarship.
The Wesbrook Scholar is awarded up to twenty outstanding undergraduate students, who stand in the top 10% of their class, and have demonstrated the ability to serve, work with, and lead others. Winners are presented with a $1000 scholarship and a certificate; the Wesbrook Scholar designation appears of the student’s permanent record.

The Dean attends the reception for the Alumni Builder Awards

Dr. Frank attended the reception for the Alumni Builder Awards this past Wednesday at the President’s house. Dr. Frank, along with the other members of the UBC Senior Leadership team, Alumni UBC, and Professor Santa Ono celebrated the ten award recipients of the night. Of the ten awards recipients, Glen Mulcahy, BPE’ 91, was honoured for his work in coaching development, physical literacy, parental education, and shaping the youth sports community in the not-for-profit, “For the Love of the Game, Youth Sports.”
The Alumni Builders Award program was created in 2017 as part of the 100th year of alumni UBC. The award recognizes alumni who have significantly contributed to the University and support alumni UBC’s mission of realizing the promise of a global community with shared ambition for a better world and an exceptional UBC

Dr. Frank, Dr. Bryson, and Katy Ellsworth traveled to the UBC Okanagan campus to administer In Service meetings as the search for two positions within the Okanagan School of Education (OSE) commenced this past Tuesday. Dr. Frank is chairing the search for the new Okanagan School of Education Director, and attended the In Service for the search for the new Associate/ Assistant Professor of Indigenous Education. As Dean of the Okanagan School of Education, Dr. Frank travels to the Okanagan on a recurring basis to ensure that the OSE adheres to the same principles and protocols as the UBC Vancouver Faculty of Education.

The Dean attends the reception for New Professors Emeriti

Dr. Frank attended the reception for New Professors Emeriti this past Monday at the President’s house. Dr. Frank, along with the other members of the UBC Senior Leadership team, College of Emeriti, and new Professors Emeriti celebrated faulty on their achievements.
Monday evening, the evening recognized Dr. Elizabeth Jordan, Senior Tenured Instructor, ECPS. Dr. Jordan traveled to Dadaab, Kenya in April 2016 and worked with Kenya’s Moi University to establish a teacher education program in the refugee camp.
