Dr. Frank welcomed the newest student cohort in the Bachelor of Education program on Thursday, August 29th in the Great Hall of The Nest. As part of their first day in the program, the students engaged in a full day of activities that prepared them for the year ahead.
TransformEd: UBC Educator Summit

Dr. Frank provided opening remarks at the Microsoft Vancouver Office to welcome teachers and educators to TransformEd: UBC Educator Summit. The Dean was delighted to speak at this event to further advance the relationship between the two groups and to emphasize the importance fostering technology in the classroom.
Faculty Orientation with Keynote Dr. Robin DiAngelo

Dr. Frank provided welcome remarks during the annual Faculty Orientation and attended the keynote: “Seeing the Racial Water,” by Dr. Robin DiAngelo. Dr. DiAngelo is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Washington, and a two-time winner of the Student’s Choice Award for Education of the Year at the University of Washington’s School of Social Work. Her keynote described the way race shapes the lives of White people and identifies common White racial patterns that prevent us from moving towards greater racial equity. The Faculty of Education was honoured to have such an acclaimed speaker at our Orientation to kick start the academic year.
Faculty Advisor Orientation

Dr. Frank gave welcome remarks to our 2019 – 2020 new and returning Faculty Advisors. As part of their orientation week, Faculty Advisors learned about the “shape of the year” and SOGI case studies to prepare for the incoming student cohorts.
Welcome to the IB Program Orientation

Dr. Frank and Dr. Marianne McTavish, Associate Dean of Teacher Education, welcomed the newest cohort of International Baccalaureate students to the Faculty of Education on Monday morning in the Ponderosa Commons Ballroom. As Canada’s first IB-recognized teacher education program, we pride ourselves as being one of the world’s leading faculties of education – focused on excellence in research, teaching and learning, and Indigenous, community, and international engagement.
Meeting with UBC’s new Comptroller, Karamjeet Heer

Dr. Frank met with Clara Ng, Assistant Dean of Finance, and Karamjeet Heer, UBC Vancouver’s new Comptroller. Appointed in July, Ms. Heer joins UBC from Providence Health Care and brings over 18 years of work experience in various industries including healthcare, transportation, and retail.
UBC Okanagan Deans’ Council

Dr. Frank attended a bi-monthly UBC Okanagan Deans’ Council meeting via videoconference. Deans from several of the university’s faculties meet once every two weeks, providing advice to the Provost on issues related to teaching and research at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
Queer Century: Rare Books Collections Tour

Dr. Frank and the UBC Library co-hosted ‘A Queer Century, 1869 – 1969: A Rare Exhibition’ tour and reception, an exhibit highlighting the ongoing relationship between UBC and the Queer community.

Dr. Frank attended a bi-monthly UBC Okanagan Deans’ Council meeting via videoconference. As part of UBC’s Academic Strategic Plan, deans from several of the university’s faculties meet once every two weeks, providing advice to the Provost on issues related to teaching and research at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
Examination committee for the doctoral exam of PhD candidate Evan Taylor

Dr. Frank examined PhD candidate Evan Taylor’s oral defense, “Cancer‘s Margins: Sexual and Gender Marginality and the Biopolitics of Knowledge.” As a supervisory committee member, Dr. Frank participated in the discussion and provided recommendations to the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Okanagan School of Education Retreat

Dr. Frank hosted the UBC Okanagan School of Education (OSE) Faculty Retreat, connecting faculty and staff from the OSE with the Senior Leadership team from the Vancouver campus. Working collaboratively on strategic planning, members of the teams were able to learn more about each other’s campuses, programs, and priorities. This bridging exercise serves as an example that will help inform the work of the Task Force on Cross-Campus Collaboration, which the Dean will chair.
