The Dean attends the Western Association of Deans in Education Conference in Courtenay, BC

February 27 – March 1, 2019

Dr. Frank and Dr. McTavish of the Faculty of Education attended the Western Association of Deans in Education on Vancouver Island. Along with several other Deans of Western Canada, the overarching theme of the conference “Everything you wanted to know about HR and a little bit more…” allowed for the Deans to learn more about current HR trends in higher education, leading in times of change, among other prominent topics in HR and Education.
The Western Association of Deans in Education is a sub-category of current members in the Association of Canadian Deans of Education.

The Dean hosts the Faculty’s Staff Appreciation Lunch

Dr. Frank hosted Faculty of Education staff members to a buffet lunch in Ponderosa Ballroom on Wednesday. Guests enjoyed a Mediterranean style lunch, games, and giveaway raffle prizes. Again, the Dean echoes his sentiments shared at the lunch and thanks everyone for all their hard work and dedication to the Faculty.

The Dean hosts Dining with the Dean for the Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma and Veterans Transition Network

Dr. Frank hosted dinner for the Faculty of Education’s Centre for Group Counselling and Trauma on Tuesday night. The purpose of the dinner was to bring together partners of the Faculty, and members of the military and Veteran communities to discuss what capacities these groups can build together to foster mental-wellness.

The Dean attends the raising of the Musqueam Indian Band Flag

Dr. Frank, Dr. Hare, and other members of the Faculty of Education attended the Musqueam Indian Band Flag raising ceremony on Tuesday, February 25th, which reflects UBC’s long-term commitment to the Musqueam Indian Band and our responsibility of reconciliation and future actions of moving forward together.

The Musqueam Indian Band flag adds to the current bilingual signage present on the University’s campus, which was installed in April of last year.

The Dean welcomes Dr. Jennifer Jenson to the Department of Language and Literacy Education the Faculty of Education

Dr. Frank met with Dr. Jennifer Jenson this past Monday, to welcome her as a new member of the Faculty.

Dr. Jenson’s research focuses on digital cultures and education, game-based learning, gender, and technology implementation and integration. Dr. Jenson spent 18 years at York University in Toronto, where she was the Director of the Institute for Research on Digital Learning.

Dr. Frank attended the Research Seminar: The Impact of a Shared Vision on the Culture of a School District.
Hosted by Dr. P. Grimmett, Dianne Turner, formerly Superintendent of the Delta School district, Chief Educator for the province of British Columbia, Official Trustee and Special Advisor of the VSB educational leadership consultant, shared the story of a school district’s journey of transformation in teaching and learning and how, in a few short years, a culture of collaborative inquiry, innovation, and continuous improvement has become the norm.

The Dean welcomes attendees to the Canadian Symposium on Home Economics Education

Dr. Frank welcomes guests to the Canadian Symposium on Home Economics Education at the AMS Nest on Friday night.
The Canadian Symposium provides a forum for sharing information and research, and action planning to strengthen home economics/family studies/human ecology/family and consumer science education in the future.

The Dean welcomes Dr. Cameron Mitchell to the School of Kinesiology in the Faculty of Education

Dr. Frank met with Dr. Cameron Mitchell this past Thursday, to welcome him as a new member of the Faculty.
Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on the mechanisms of muscle growth and loss, as well as how these relate to changes in physical function. His research seeks to understand the mechanisms that drive age related muscle loss and identify interventions, including resistance training and increasing protein intake.

Dr. Frank met with Dr. Sharon Stein this past Thursday, to welcome her as a new member of the Faculty.
Dr. Stein’s research focuses on critically-oriented approaches to: the ethics, philosophy, foundations, and political economy of higher education; and internationalization, decolonization, political economy, sustainability and climate change, and the politics of difference in both formal and informal educational contexts.

The Dean hosts Family Day at Science World for UBC Education Alumni

Dr. Frank hosted UBC Education Alumni and their families in a fun and casual get together at Science World. Guests enjoyed a continental breakfast, while the kids were entertained with crafts, science world interactive displays and complimentary tickets to the Great Bear Rainforest Omnimax Theatre show that same day.

Dr. Frank and Dr. Scott of the Faculty of Education met with Ms. Martina Meckova, Executive Director, and Ms. Paula Salloum, Project Development Coordinator of Beedie Luminaries to discuss scholarship opportunities within Education.
B.C. developer Ryan Beedie has promised $50 million to fund post-secondary scholarships through a new education foundation, Beedie Luminaries. The Beedie Luminaires Scholarship is for students with potential who are facing financial adversity.

The Dean attends the Association of British Columbia Deans in Education Meeting

Dr. Frank attended the monthly meeting for the Association of British Columbia of Deans of Education (ABCDE) at Simon Fraser University. Along with the other Deans from the universities within British Columbia, the all-day event discussed several topics ranging from Indigenous Education, SOGI initiatives at UBC, and Western Association of Deans in Education Conference 2019.

The ABCDE is a cohort of the Associate of Canadian Deans of Education, comprised of Deans, Directors, or Chairs of BC Faculties, Schools, Colleges, or Departments of Education committed to pan-Canadian leadership in professional and teacher education, educational research, and policy in universities and university-colleges.

Dr. Blye Frank and Dr. Wendy Carr attended the Minstry of Education's 2nd annual School Community Health Conference – Leading Mentally Healthy Schools in BC.

This conference aligns with our ongoing work in school based mental health and our commitment to collaboration with education and community partners. The conference brought together Ministry and Education Sector Partners, Health Authorities, and small teams from BC's School Districts.

The Dean chairs the Advisory Committee for the Strategic Plan Implementation

During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Faculty of Education embarked on the development of a new Strategic Plan for the Faculty of Education for the next 5 years.
