The Dean provides welcome remarks at the Orchard Garden Summer Solstice Celebration

Dr. Frank provided opening remarks at the Orchard Garden Summer Solstice Celebration on behalf of the Faculty of Education. The celebration gave individuals of the UBC Community a chance to socialize, tour the garden, and participate in garden activities. The Solstice Celebration was planned and organized by the thirteen UBC elementary and middle years’ teacher candidates who are participating in a Community Field Experience in the Orchard Garden this year, along with the graduate students from the Orchard Garden team.

Dr. Frank met with other UBC deans for their monthly Committee of Deans meeting in the Old Administration Building on Wednesday. Together with the Provost, the deans work to advance UBC’s academic strategy.
The Dean tours the Rare Books and Special Collections Exhibition, “A Queer Century, 1896 – 1969”

Dr. Frank, Dr. Carr, Dr. Quartermain, and Dr. Scott toured the Rare Books and Special Collections Exhibition, “A Queer Century, 1896 – 1969,” in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. Collection curators Dr. Gregory Mackie and Dr. Kyle Frackman showed the group an exhibition promoting UBC’s expanding treasure-trove of queer cultural history, most of which was made possible through the Jane Rule Endowment for the Study of Human Relationships.
The Dean attends dinner and a Signing Ceremony with the National Education Examinations Authority and Paragon Testing Enterprise

Dr. Frank attended dinner with the National Education Examinations Authority and Paragon Testing Enterprise at the Victoria Chinese Restaurant in downtown Vancouver. Attendees included representatives from the Chinese Consulate in Vancouver (NEEA) and Paragon Testing Enterprises. The dinner preceded a Signing Ceremony to deliver the Canadian Academic English Language Test – Computer Education (CAEL CE) in the People’s Republic of China.
The Dean attends UBC Opera’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’

Dr. Frank attended UBC Opera’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ at UBC’s Old Auditorium. The UBC Opera Ensemble, founded in 1995, educates and promotes gifted young opera singers while preparing them for international careers.
The Dean participates in the Queer and/or Trans and Allies Community Celebration

Dr. Frank and Dr. Carr joined UBC Equity and Inclusion’s afternoon celebration for community building with queer and/or trans* students, faculty, staff, and allies. The celebration was a space to network and recognize the leadership and resilience of those championing queer and trans visibility and inclusion at UBC, and explored further opportunities to support an inclusive campus community.

Dr. Frank participated in Royal Roads University’s Convocation ceremony for the installation of President Philip Steenkamp. The installation ceremony of Dr. Philip Steenkamp, the university’s fourth President and Vice-Chancellor, coincided with the university’s 45th Convocation.

Hosted by the School of Kinesiology asked the panelists how to explore the innovative impacts of the HPCTL program from both the student and high performance sport sectors.

Dr. Frank attended the Vancouver Summer Program’s Welcome Event for their first group of cohorts this summer. The event took place at the Nest; with over 350 students registered in the Faculty of Education’s program alone, the four-week academic program provides the opportunity to take academic courses while learning about Canadian practices and culture.

A respected mental-health issues advocate, Margaret Trudeau spoke of her own mental health stories and the importance of nurturing the body, mind, and spirit.

Dr. Frank attended the Sherman Lecture in memory of the late Dr. Ann Sherman during Congress 2019. This year’s presentation, Dbwewin: On the Pedagogy of Truth, Dr. Sheila Cote-Meek has played a lead role in the development of the Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre, the Master of Indigenous Relations program, and the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute at Laurentian University.

The Association of Canadian Deans of Education is an association of Deans, Directors, or Chairs of Canadian Faculties, Schools, Colleges, or Departments of Education committed to pan-Canadian leadership in professional and teacher education, educational research, and policy in universities, and university-colleges.

Dr. Frank attended several ACDE sessions during Congress/ CSSE 2019 at UBC this past week. The annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences brings together over 70 scholarly associations, such as the Canadian Society for the Study of Education. Spanning the first week of June, and attracting over 8000 attendees, Congress brings together academics, researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners to share findings, refine ideas, and build partnerships that will help shape the Canada of tomorrow.

Dr. Blye Frank welcomed the Plenary speaker Dr. Jo-ann Arhcibald during Congress/ CSSE 2019. Dr. Jo-ann Archibald shared Indigenous stories and perspectives bout the success and challenges of bringing Indigeneity, reconciliation, and education together in Canadian education early learning, K/12, and post-secondary contexts.

Dr. Frank hosted a Cocktail party and dinner for ACDE members and spouses during CSSE 2019. With more than 1200 education scholars gathered on the UBC campus for the week of Congress, the dinner was a celebration of the fellowship as deans, directors, and chairs of education in Canadian faculties of education.
