The Dean attends the Deans’ Council for UBC-O

March 20, 2019

Dr. Frank met with the other UBC-Okanagan Deans as part of the Advisory council to the Provost. The mandate of the Council is to provide a forum for discussing academic issues such as program development, enhancing the academic infrastructure, etc. The council provides advice to the Provost on issues relating to teaching and research at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus.

The Dean attends EdFest 2019

Dr. Frank attended EdFest 2019, a conference that focuses on Shared Leadership, Developing Student Inquiry and Wonder, and Social Emotional Learning. Dr. Frank participated in multicultural professional development experiences to bring back to the Faculty.

The Dean attends the Okanagan Leadership Team Meeting

Dr. Frank attends the Okanagan Leadership Team meeting via videoconference on Monday. The Okanagan Leadership Team is the senior advisory body to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal on key administrative decisions for UBC’s Okanagan campus.

The Dean attends Donor Appreciation Day at Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre

Dr. Frank attended Donor Appreciation Day this past Thursday, which recognized the unique contribution of individuals who are employed at UBC and contribute philanthropically to the institution, building a culture of philanthropy on campus.
The impact of giving helps students, and then UBC community reach its full potential; as part of the UBC Strategic Plan, UBC Development aids in the expansion of student access, alumni networks and institutional partnerships to reinforce global and local communities

The Dean attends Making the Case: Recognizing and Assessing Indigenous Scholarship in Higher Education

Dr. Frank attended the panel presentation with Indigenous scholars and leaders this past Friday at the UBC Longhouse.
Dr. Margaret Kovach, Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann, Mr. Ian Cull, and Dr. Charles Menzies spoke about how higher education might transform the foundational norms by attending to non-traditional scholarship and Indigenous ways of knowing in university culture, policies, and practices.

Dr. Frank hosted Frankly Speaking: Cannabis, Kids, and the Classroom on Wednesday, March 13, at UBC Robson Square. The purpose of the event provided alumni and friends of UBC’s Faculty of Education the opportunity to hear from prominent speakers’ thoughts on how educators can help students navigate responsible and legal consumption by young people both now and in the future.

Discussing UBC’s Strategic Plan, Professor Ono focused on issues of transportation, research and innovation, and how UBC affects the province and Greater Vancouver region

The Dean welcomes back The Honorable Senator Yonah Martin to the Faculty of Education

Dr. Frank welcomes The Honorable Yonah Martin, BEd ’87, back to the Faculty of Education as she travelled to the University campus as part of her launch for UBC Women in House project.

The Hon. Ms. Martin received a Bachelor of Education in 1987 from UBC and had a 21 year teaching career in Abbotsford, Burnaby, and Coquitlam. She earned a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in 1996 and went on to serve in the Senate of Canada in 2009 under the Conservative Party.

Dr. Frank met with several distinguished members of the National Taiwan Normal University as they visited the University campus this past Thursday. In an effort to share the knowledge, the Dean spoke about our Faculty’s functioning and how the International Office aids in the partnership between the Universities, creating reciprocal field exchange programs and collaboration projects.

Dr. Frank attended the Senate Curriculum Committee Meeting this past Wednesday as part of his portfolio as the Dean of the Faculty of Education. Dr. Frank, along with the other members of the Senate Curriculum Committee meet once a month to discuss topics as they relate to faculties' academic programming and educational activities.

Dr. Frank hosted dinner for the Faculty of Education’s SOGI UBC group on Wednesday night. The purpose of the dinner was to bring together partners of the Faculty, and members of SOGI UBC and stewards of Education to discuss what philanthropic initiatives these groups can build together to increase the capacity of the SOGI UBC portfolio and increase awareness and inclusivity.
