Dr. Frank attended the morning sessions of the 2019 conference on Intersectionalities in Leadership and Supporting Students with Special Needs The conference brought together 100 educational leaders from across Canada to consider the intersections of school leadership, Indigeneity, and inclusion.

Dr. Frank, alongside Dr. Gage Averill, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, welcomed members of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education to Congress 2019. As one of the leading Faculties of Education in the world, Dr. Frank was delighted to share and showcase UBC’s scholarly work as we hosted colleagues from across the country.

The Dean provides welcome remarks at the Supporting Teachers Symposium

Dr. Frank welcomed visiting scholars and faculty to the Supporting Teachers to work with culturally, linguisitcally, and racially diverse students, families, and communities Symposium at the UBC First Nations Longhouse. The collaborative work of the department of Language and Literacy Education, the Teacher Education Office, and the Office of Indigenous Education, provided the two-day Symposium, with the help of Dr. Guofang Li and her team. It is Symposiums like these, that enable the Faculty to advance educational research, and understanding of teaching and learning.

The Dean provides welcome remarks at the RISE Summit at Musqueam Cultural Centre

Dr. Frank welcomed twenty-five teacher eucation scholars from across Canada at the RISE Summit on 2SLGBTQ-inclusive Teacher Education. The Summit is stage 3 of a larger SSHRC-funded project that is developing evidence-based, context- specific curriculum and extra-curricular recommendations for queering teacher education.

The Dean hosts Tea with the Dean and presents the Awards for Staff Excellence

Dr. Frank hosted the annual Spring Tea with the Dean in conjunction with presenting the Awards for Staff Excellence. An annual tradition at the end of the Winter II term, the Dean’s Awards for Staff Excellence extends the Faculty’s appreciation for the valuable contributions of individual staff. This year was the first time that the awards were separated into two categories: Outstanding Service and Emerging Leadership. Congratulations to the 2018-2019 award recipients, Joel Kobylka (TEO) and Lisa Altan (LLED), and a special thanks to those nominated: Vicki Domansky (ECE), Kimberly Truong (KIN), and Cliff Storlund (KIN).

Dr. Frank attended the Cmolik Foundation Awards Gala for the 2019 year. The Cmolik Foundation creates opportunities for every BC student through scholarships and field trips, giving students, who have experienced adversity in their lives, access to educational opportunities in the hopes of helping them achieve their dreams.

The Dean presents Mr. John Nanson with the 2019 Alumni Teacher of the Year Award

Dr. Frank presented the award for the 2019 Alumni Teacher of the Year to Mr. John Nanson, at Edmonds Community School in Burnaby. The Alumni Teacher of the Year award is presented to an individual who has graduated from the UBC Faculty of Education with either a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree and are currently working as educators in schools, educational institutions, and/ or community organizations.

The Dean hosts the 10th Annual Evening in Support of UBC’s CampOUT!

Dr. Frank hosted the 10th anniversary evening in support of CampOUT! – a life-changing program for queer, trans, Two-Spirit, and allied youth from across BC and the Yukon. This event is the primary source of fundraising for the summer leadership youth program. With the program now housed in the Faculty of Education, the Dean was elated to share in his excitement how the current initiatives of SOGI UBC, and Mental Health Literacy aligns with CampOUT! and the Faculty’s promise of supporting inclusive and diverse education for all

The Dean travels to London to help expand the Veterans Transition Programme into the UK

May 20 – 24, 2019

Dr. Frank travelled to London, England to attend several meetings and Parliamentary receptions for the Veterans Transition Program. The week-long endeavor was an opportunity for our Veterans Transition Network to expand to the United Kingdom; a first step to becoming a global leader in the counselling and services acquired for those who have served in the military.

Dr. Frank travelled to Kelowna, BC to host a UBC Alumni and Friends Reception event at the Kelowna Yacht club on Thursday. The event was an opportunity for alumni, students, and faculty members in the Kelowna region to gather together to receive the latest news about the UBC Faculty of Education and the UBCO School of Education.

The Dean travels to Kelowna to attend UBCO Senate and chairs the Search for a new OSE Director

May 16 – 17, 2019

Dr. Frank and Ms. Ellsworth travelled to Kelowna, BC to attend several Okanagan School of Education chair the search for a new OSE Director on Thursday. The Dean also attended UBCO Senate while in Kelowna. As Dean of the Okanagan School of Education, Dr. Frank travels to the Okanagan on a recurring basis to ensure that the OSE adheres to the same principles and protocols as the UBC Vancouver Faculty of Education.

Dr. Frank attended his monthly Deans’ Council meeting with the UBC Okanagan campus via videoconference. As part of the Advisory council to the Provost, the mandate of the Council is to provide a forum for discussing academic issues such as program development, enhancing the academic infrastructure, etc. The council provides advice to the Provost on issues relating to teaching and research at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus.

Dr. Frank and Dr. Scott attended the premier event of the 2019 Spark Gala, celebrating Champions of the Earth. Showcasing philanthropy at its best, with guest speakers Chip Wilson, Peter Legge, and Afroz Shah, Dr. Frank and Dr. Scott met with business leaders and dignitaries that are keen to discuss empowerment programs that teach youth about philanthropy, and provide humanitarian aid and education for women, children and refugees worldwide.

The Dean hosts an Appreciation Tea at Hycroft Manor

Dr. Frank hosted a high tea reception to thank friends of the Faculty. Several current members of the Faculty, along with alumni, emeriti, and donors were invited to the reception that shared the work being done at the Faculty surrounding mental health education, and overall wellness. UBC recognizes the foundational importance of wellbeing to our success as individuals, as a university, and as a community.

Dr. Frank, Dr. Scott, and Mr. Laidler attended the TPL Engagement Luncheon, hosted by the True Patriot Love (TPL) Foundation, as part of the UBC Faculty of Education’s endeavours with the Faculty’s Veterans Transition Network. Meeting with TPL donors and members alike, the Dean was able to see how the Faculty would be able to get involved as the TPL Foundation highlights veterans transitioning.

The Dean visits UBC Child Care Services

The Dean and Dr. Iris Berger of Early Childhood Education, visited UBC Child Care Services on Monday. As part of Child Care month, Dr. Frank went to visit two of the child care facilities on campus, Salal and Kittiwake, and met with the Program Director, Dr. Deb Thompson, to collaborate and coordinate further with UBC Childcare and the program that the Faculty has.

The Dean and Dr. Marianne McTavish attended the 2019 BC Teacher Education Roundtable held this year at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC. This year’s theme What does ‘Seme’Ishun – Clearing the Path’ look like as we work towards decolonizing our practices, discussed how the shared history has shaped the journeys, and/or impacted decisions/ actions of those educators that attended the Roundtable.
