The Dean attends the Dean’s Office Not Myself Today Campaign

October 30 – November 2, 2018

Dr. Frank and the Dean's Office staff members participated in the Not Myself Today Initiative, a week-long campaign in partnership with UBC Thrive week aimed at creating a mentally healthy workplace environment. By building greater awareness, reducing stigma, and fostering safe and supportive cultures, several of the Dean's Office staff members led the campaign focusing on topics surrounding mental health. Activities during the week included where to find mental health resources on-and-off campus, learning more about mental health and emotional intelligence, spreading positivity and gratitude around the office, and celebrating coworkers with a potluck and gifts.

The Dean is a consultant on panel recommendations for the Eminence Fund

October 29, 2018

Dr. Frank was asked to be part of a consultant panel to asses proposals brought forward as applications for the Eminence Fund Program. The Deans assessed the proposals' alignment with the strategic research priorities of the units, faculties, campus, and university and made final recommendations to the Provost and Vice-Principal of Research in UBC-Okanagan.

The Eminence Program and intended to catalyze research and knowledge creation initiatives that will be used strategically to attract further external opportunities.

The Dean attends a Senate Curriculum Committee Meeting

Dr. Frank attended the Senate Curriculum Committee Meeting this past Monday as part of his portfolio as the Dean of the Faculty of Education. Dr. Frank, along with the other members of the Senate Curriculum Committee meet once a month to discuss topics as they relate to faculties' academic programming and educational activities.

Dr. Frank met with Ms. Barbara Meens Thistle as a welcome to the University as well as allow her to understand and learn a bit about the Faculty of Education. Ms. Meens Thistle's previous work as VP of Central Services in ICBC means she has extensive knowledge and a credible background working in one of British Columbia's largest public sector organizations.

The Dean meets Visiting Elder Mary Jane Joe

Dr. Blye Frank met with Visiting Elder Mary Jane Joe this past Monday afternoon. Elder Mary Jane visited the UBC Vancouver campus as an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to engage with Elders and knowledge keepers and to advance Indigenous priorities in the field of education. Elder Mary Jane works with Indigenous Artists and educators within public schools to bring Indigenous peoples history, traditional teachings and perspectives into the classroom.

The Dean travels to Charlottetown, PEI to attend the Association of Canadian Deans of Education Fall Meeting

The Dean attended the annual fall meeting for the Association of Canadian Deans of Education was held this week in Charlottetown, PEI. Several topics were discussed during the three-day conference, which included challenges, concerns, ideas, and best practices each Dean has faced during their tenure.

The Dean participated in the Faculty Relations studio of the Senior Leaders' On-boarding at Irving K. Barber Learning Centre this past Monday, October 22, 2018. Among other Deans, both senior and new to the role, Dr. Frank shared his insights on issues concerning faculty such as retirement, recruitment, performance, promotion and tenure, and his responsibilities as Dean in the Faculty of Education.

The Dean Attends the Special Honorary Degree Conferral for His Highness The Aga Khan

Dr. Blye Frank joined the academic procession at the University of British Columbia’s and Simon Fraser University’s special honorary degree conferral for His Highness the Aga Khan on Friday, October 19, 2018. His Highness the Aga Khan is the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. The Aga Khan has a longstanding relationship with Canada going back over 40 years, and working closely with Canadian governments and organizations on initiatives that promote inclusive, sustainable development and improve quality of life. For over 60 years, His Highness has been one of the world’s leading advocates of a pluralist, cosmopolitan ethic, one that embraces human diversity as an opportunity and as an antidote to social fragmentation and division. A first for both universities, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University are each awarding an honorary doctorate of laws degree.

The Dean hosted Kevin Lamoureux for the Faculty of Education Staff Professional Development Workshop Series III: Sharing in Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. A workshop on exploring the history of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Kevin Lamoureux facilitated the discussion how each and every one can participate in Truth and Reconciliation not just as professionals, but as individual citizens committed to justice and equality for all. Dr. Frank thanks everyone who attended this event and Kevin Lamoureux for enabling staff members to gain more insight and knowledge of how we as staff members within education can help educate and bring awareness to others.

The evening’s theme of Indigenous Education brought about how reconciliation is a process that starts with education. Through education, we better understand the history, policies, practices, and decisions that affect First Nations in Canada, and that have led us to today.

The Dean and Dr. Wendy Carr attended the official welcome event for the UBC Pride Installation on the University Commons Plaza. As part of the Jane Rule Endowment, the Faculty of Education helped sponsor the event, reflecting UBC’s commitment to inclusion. Hosted by UBC Equity and Inclusion Office, The Pride Installation Celebration is part of the overall programming efforts to raise visibility of the LGBTQ2SQIA+ community, provide informational and educational opportunities, facilitate connections and networking building, and build a positive and inclusive campus community.

A special free concert, hosted by Professor Santa Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC, Tony Yike Yang is emerging as one of the foremost pianists of the younger generation, performing extensively in Canada and the United States and making numerous appearances in Europe and Asia.

The Dean is a guest speaker at the Transformative Educational Leadership Program

The Dean opened the launch of the next cohort of students in the Transformative Educational Leadership Program with his presentation titled, “Transforming Leadership.” A staple of the program, the Dean shared his insights, thoughts, and actions on how leadership and education have a significant role in the well-being of people and communities. The Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELP) is a blended approach to education, combining face-to-face retreats and online interaction, providing outstanding opportunities for interaction and collaboration among groups across the program.

The Dean and fellow faculty members attended the 23rd Annual Quarter Century Club Dinner to recognize active full-time faculty members with 25 years of dedicated service. Established in 1996 by President David Strangway, the annual dinner has become an opportunity for members to keep in touch with each other in a celebratory environment. Three of our faculty members were awarded with a specially-designed pin at the dinner and are presented with a membership card, which confers privileges such as free admission to several UBC-affiliated services and attractions.

On Wednesday October 10, Dean Frank hosted the October meeting of the UBC Committee of Deans in the Guest Lounge on the 18th floor of Ponderosa Commons.  Faculty Deans and other senior academic leaders in the University meet regularly as the Committee of Deans. Under the leadership of the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Committee meets to discuss academic strategy, resources and other issues of institutional significance.

The Dean hosted lunch with Claire Rushton, the Director of the Teacher Education Office, and the 2018-2019 Education Students' Association to welcome them into the new academic year. The Education Students' Association (ESA) is an elected council with a mandate that builds community for all teacher candidates in the 2018-2019 BED Program.

The Dean hosts dinner with his Senior Advisor, Dr. Wendy Carr, and Professor of the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Goli Rezai-Rashti. The purpose of this dinner was the Faculty’s initiative, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity-Inclusive Education. SOGI UBC expands the work of the 2016-2018 Teacher Education for All project designed to build capacity in the area of SOGI inclusion in the UBC Faculty of Education.

The Dean attended the International Institute of Social and Economic Sciences 6th Teaching and Education Conference in Vienna, Austria. There, the Dean presented his work on Teaching and Learning for Diversity as part of the Higher Education, Lifelong Education Session.
