Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night

The 2013/14 Teacher Education program award recipients were honoured at the Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night held on November 27. The Dean was pleased to take part in the awards ceremony, and earlier in the evening hosted a Donor Appreciation Dinner to acknowledge the generosity of the award donors.
Dean Blye Frank extends an invitation to attend the upcoming, “How to Love a Child”, the Janusz Korczak Lecture Series – Centennial Sessions. Everyone is welcome.
This lecture series is devoted to key issues crucial to the well-being and rights of children and young people today, fostering conversations among academics, professionals and child advocates from diverse fields concerned with the welfare of the child. A range of disciplines and expertise including law, medicine, child welfare and education are represented in this series, and a variety of perspectives and issues will be addressed.

Head, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)
Dr. Lee Gunderson, Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED), began a 12-month appointment as Department Head pro tem on July 1, 2015.
On September 3, the search committee met to short list from the twelve applications received to date, although the search is still open.
Head, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)
The search committee met on September 2 to review the advertisement and begin the development of the questions for the candidate interviews. It is anticipated the ad will be in circulation by the end of September.
Faculty of Education
As per procedure when a Dean reaches the final year of an appointment term, the Office of the Provost has initiated an External Review of the Faculty of Education. Dr. Herbert Rosengarten, Professor Emeritus, Department of English, Faculty of Arts will act as Review Coordinator and facilitate the review on behalf of Dr. Angela Redish, Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem.
Three external reviewers will be onsite November 16-18, 2015. Katy Ellsworth, Executive Director of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education will facilitate the preparation of a self-study document, which is required as part of the review.
In August, requests for data and information were sent to relevant units. The deadline for submitting data and information to the Dean’s Office for inclusion in the self-study was September 18. On October 16, the self-study and other materials will be sent to the Provost’s Office.
Master of Educational Technology (MET)
The external review of MET was held on July 2-3, and the final report from the external review team was received on September 1. The report will be reviewed and discussed by Drs. Tom Sork and Mark Edwards, along with the MET Advisory Committee and other appropriate committees/individuals.
The response from Drs. Sork and Edwards is expected September 25.
Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)
Department response and strategic plan received and forwarded to the Provost office June 30.

Dr. Pam Ratner, Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation
Dr. Pam Ratner, Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation, has accepted an appointment as Interim Vice-Provost and AVP Enrolment and Academic Facilities, effective July 1, 2015 for a one-year term.
Dean Frank thanks Dr. Ratner for her dedication and service in her role as Head, EDST pro tem and then as Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation, and wishes her all the best in her new role.
Dr. Mary Bryson, Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation
Dr. Mary Bryson began a 10-month term as Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation, on September 1, 2015.
In this new role, Dr. Bryson will provide the Dean with high-level support and advice in the areas of administration infrastructures and innovation, and also assist him with the ongoing development and implementation of the Faculty’s strategic plan. Included in Dr. Bryson’s portfolio are:
- Oversight of the Faculty of Education’s overall budget
- Faculty recruitment, appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure processes
- Matters concerning faculty affairs administration including salary, leaves and retirement
- Mentoring of newly appointed faculty members
- Matters concerning the Faculty’s space allocation (Scarfe and Ponderosa Commons)
Dr. Wendy Carr, Associate Dean, Teacher Education
Dr. Wendy Carr moved from her position as Director of Teacher Education to assume the role of Associate Dean of Teacher Education on July 1, 2015.
Dr. Robert Boushel, Director, School of Kinesiology (KIN)
Dr. Robert Boushel began a five-year term as the new Director of the School of Kinesiology on July 6, 2015.
On September 24, Dean Frank joined Associate Dean, Teacher Education, Dr. Wendy Carr, and West Kootenay Teacher Education Program Coordinators and instructors for the grand opening of our new learning centre in Nelson, BC. On September 25, the Dean welcomed West Kootenay teacher candidates to the program.
On September 22, Dean Frank gave a talk on professionalism to Bachelor of Education (BEd) teacher candidates.
Dr. Frank attended the Major Entrance Scholarship Reception, held at Sage Bistro on September 15.
On September 15, Dean Frank invited faculty and staff to join him for tea, coffee, light refreshments, and conversation with colleagues.
Dean Frank and members of the senior leadership team greeted students with coffee and donuts on September 14.
Dean Frank welcomed the class of 2016 via video conference at the Student Orientation at the Chan Centre on September 8.
Dr. Frank joined faculty members from the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at the annual Faculty Orientation held September 1 at the University Golf Club. Topics covered included new BC curricula and integrating Aboriginal perspectives across BEd courses.
From September 5 – 11, Dr. Frank attended the 2015 ECER Conference at Corvinus University, Budapest, where he presented a HIMM poster.
On September 3, Dean Frank met with representatives from a variety of agencies, including the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), the UBC Department of Psychiatry, Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation, Capilano College, Douglas College, ABLE Development Clinic, and the Pacific Autism Family Centre (PAFC) at a visioning session for a provincial educational and vocational strategy for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
On September 2, Dean Frank announced the launch of the Year of Alumni. As part of the Faculty’s The Year of… initiative, and in conjunction with UBC’s Centennial, the Faculty of Education will be recognizing the achievements of 100 outstanding and diverse alumni from September 2015 to August 2016. The first in a series of Education’s 100 showcases features eleven Indigenous Education leaders.
Dean Frank welcomed Dr. Mary Bryson as they began their 10-month term as Senior Associate Dean, Administration & Innovation on September 1.
On August 25, Dean Frank attended a luncheon with Deputy Minister of Education Dave Byng.
During his trip to Kelowna on August 19-21, Dr. Frank took part in several events. On August 19, the Dean joined Dr. Steve Cardwell at a FreshGrade Think Tank session held at UBC’s Okanagan campus. On August 20, Dr. Frank joined Dr. Cardwell at the Transformative Educational Leadership Program (TELp) information session held at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre, then attended the 3rd Annual BC School Superintendents Association (BCSSA) Reception. On August 21, Dr. Frank met with members of the UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Education.
On August 4, Dean Frank joined Dr. Ross Paul, UBC Academic Leadership Program Leader, at a dinner to welcome delegates from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, who were in Vancouver to attend the UBC Academic Leadership Program.
On August 2, Dean Frank joined a contingent from the Faculty of Education and the Vancouver School Board in the 37th Vancouver Pride Parade.
Dr. Frank attended Education International’s 7th World Congress in Ottawa from July 22-26. The Congress was attended by over 1,000 delegates and observers from 142 countries.
On July 9, Dean Frank attended the 2015 Historical Thinking Summer Institute dinner.
Dr. Frank attended the banquet for the BCPVPA’s Annual Short Course, held at UBC for new and nearly-new principals and vice-principals on July 9.
Dr. Frank joined UBC University Librarian, Dr. Ingrid Parent, Education Library Head Librarian, Chris Ball, Dr. Tom Sork, Associate Dean International, and Tracy Wyman, Project Director, at a re-opening celebration on July 16 for the newly renovated Education Library.
The Dean joined teacher candidates at an Ice Cream Social on July 9, where ice cream was served up by the Education Students Association (ESA), end-of-year gifts were handed out by the Teacher Education Office, and new alumni connected with the Alumni Engagement team.
Dean Frank provided welcoming remarks at the second annual TEC Expo, held July 8 and 9 by Educational Technology Support (ETS). The event showcased creative, innovative and effective uses of technologies for learning by both faculty and students in the Faculty of Education.
On July 8, Dr. Frank joined the School of Kinesiology at a welcome reception for incoming Director, Dr. Robert Boushel.
On July 7, Dean Frank met with the British Columbia School Superintendents Association (BCSSA) executive to discuss a BCSSA Executive Leadership Program.
In June, Dr. Frank attended the LGBTQ Leaders in Higher Education: Shaping Our Futures conference at Adler University, Chicago. The conference provides professional development opportunities for LGBTQ administrators in higher education, as well as community building and networking to support LGBTQ voice and leadership.
Dean Frank invited faculty, staff and students to a special event on June 23 to recognize the contributions of:

Dean Frank hosted a recognition event for the Educational Administration and Leadership Program (EDAL) and their alumni at the Vancouver School District Board Office on June 18. Kit Krieger, Executive Director of the BC Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association of Vancouver, gave a talk on The Importance of Professional Learning.
