The Dean travels to Jinan, China for the 2018 World Education Day Conference

September 25 – September 28, 2018

In order to promote international cooperation and innovation in education, and strengthen the integration of Chinese and Western education concepts, the Dean traveled to Jinan, China to present at World Education Day 2018. Dr. Frank presented on “Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity in Universities and Faculties of Education in Canada,” which tied to the conferences theme of Inheritance, Opening, Smartness, and Sharing.

The Dean continues to aid in the search for the new VP of Students. Dr. Frank, along with other Senior Leadership Members of UBC were sitting in on panel interviews as they finalize the list of applicants. As part of the VP Students Portfolio, Student Development & Services works in partnership with faculties and other campus service providers. Dr. Frank’s wealth of knowledge in Health Promotion & Education, and enriched educational experiences made him an ideal person to help find the best and most successful candidate for this role.

Across British Columbia and Canada the opioid crisis has become a pandemic, and one that effects primarily young people. As leaders and educators it is our duty to learn about how we can help combat this crisis.

The Dean speaks at the Veteran Affairs Fundraising Event

Dr. Frank shared opening remarks during the Veterans Affairs Fundraising Event Thursday evening and the connection between the Faculty of Education and the Veteran Transition Program, a 10-day program supporting Veterans in overcoming barriers to their return to civilian life after service.

Education maintains a grassroots connection to the military and has many veterans completing their Masters in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education in order to support their military colleagues in their transitions home.

The Dean attended Renee Fleming's Music and the Mind presentation, as it explores the power of music in relation to health, including childhood development, music therapy, and discoveries that are changing our understanding of the brain.

Ms. Fleming's journey as an artist has been struck by music's power to heal and transform lives. "Today we are riding a wave of scientific discovery in music and neuroscience, and I'm fascinated by the breadth of the research being conducted."

The Dean hosted the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture

The Dean introduced Ms. Marta Santos Pais as the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture’s feature speaker. The evening, hosted by the Dean and Mr. Jerry Nussbaum, was in partnership with the Faculty of Education and the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada. Among UBC Faculty of Education alumni, current students, faculty members, staff, and external guests, Ms. Santos Pais spoke of her work on Making Zero Humankind’s Favourite Number: Zero Violence against Children.

Ms. Santos Pais has been strongly committed to mobilizing action and political support to maintain momentum around the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children. A global advocate, Ms. Santos Pais was appointed as Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children on May 1, 2009, and took up her position on September 1, 2009.

Ms. Santos Pais is the Dean's Distinguished Lecture speaker for the following night's event held at the UBC Robert M. Lee Alumni Centre. Ms. Santos Pais promotes the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children.

Donuts, provided by Lee's Donuts of Granville Island, coffee and tea of Scholars Catering, and live jazz music of first year students in the School of Music made for an exciting Tuesday morning in Scarfe.

The Dean welcomed the newest cohort of graduate students in the Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS). Along with Administers, Faculty, Staff, and Advisors, the Dean mixed and mingled with the newest additions to the program, getting updated on their first week of classes.

ECPS is a community of scholars committed to the use and application of psychological foundations and research to understanding and solving human problems across the lifespan.

Dr. Frank travelled to the UBC Okanagan's Campus to visit the School of Education, as well as take part in the first Dean's Council Meeting of the 2018/2019 Academic year. Dr. Frank represented the Okanagan School of Education in the meeting and discussed planning and budget in relation to the university-wide strategic goals.

As part of the UBC Dialogues event series, the Dean and fellow panelists discussed the changing societal views of masculinity in the 21st Century. The event took place in Kelowna, BC and hypothesized what would a healthier and more respectful view of masculinity look like among other questions that have appeared at the forefront of the #MeToo movement.

Dr. Frank's main area of scholarship is the sociology of boys' and mens' health and has developed the theoretical framework of Health, Illness, Men and Masculinities, which centres masculinity as a social determinant of health.

First Year NITEP Students Meet the Dean

Dr. Frank met with the first-year students of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP). This Indigenous Education cohort are keen to develop deeper understandings and innovative approaches that advance Indigenous educational perspectives. Dr. Frank welcomed the new students to the program, and handed out individual welcome packages for the start of their school year.

The Dean and fellow staff members of the Dean's Office and Teacher Education Office welcomed the new cohort of undergraduate students at the Chan Centre on the first day of the 2018/2019 school year. As part of Imagine Day, members of the Senior Leadership team and other speakers of the Teacher Education Office welcomed first year students to the program. On the first day of classes, the campus is transformed and the entire UBC community comes together to welcome students to their new academic community and celebrate the start of the school year.
