After more than half a century, Don Cunnings (UBC alumnus and graduate of School of Physical Education, now Kinesiology) recalls his experience as a rec therapy worker in Coquitlam’s Riverview Hospital during the 1950s.
Working alongside patients, Cunnings remembers the positive role physical activity played in strengthening confidence, wellness, and a sense of community. By organizing opportunities for physical participation, Cunnings saw results and, he now tells us, “It sensitized me to focus on the whole person… to see that patient holistically.” This dedication to a more active lifestyle among patients was exemplified in his creative introduction of music.
