Dean Jan Hare is pleased to announce the 2026 UBC Faculty of Education Reconciliation and Decolonization Alumni Award recipient:

The award acknowledges extraordinary alumni who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, respect, and commitment to furthering decolonization efforts or reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples or communities, or who have inspired others to continue decolonization or reconciliation efforts. Kaleb Child, BEd’01
Kaleb Child, Musgamdzi is a member of the Kwakiutl (Kwagiulth) First Nation tracing his family roots to First Nations and settler ancestries. Kaleb is a strong cultural leader, lifelong learner and educator, and traditional singer amongst the Kwak’wala speaking people.
Kaleb has over 25 years of service as a teacher and in a variety of educational leadership roles for First Nations and Public Schools (K-12), Early Learning, Adult Education and Post-Secondary Programs. His education and professional experience continue to support visions for First Nations control of education, self-determination and jurisdiction. Kaleb carries a Bachelor of Education degree as a graduate of NITEP, the Indigenous Teachers Education Program at the University of British Columbia, and a master’s degree in education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Victoria.
In his roles, Kaleb is best known for enhancing and supporting leadership development, modeling collective responsibility, committing to equitable learning environments and reflecting Indigenous vision for pedagogy. As an educator and advocate, Kaleb promotes authentic learning connections for all learners, language and culture revitalization, and strengthening meaningful relationships across communities.
Kaleb has been a teacher, Director, District Principal, Director of Instruction, Provincial Director, education consultant, and is currently the Chief Executive Officer at the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board. He currently lives in Victoria with his partner Yakawilas, Coreen Child, and life adventures alongside their three daughters, Tłakweł’ganaxw, Kiara, Tłakwa’gila’ogwa, Natalya, and Tłakwa’ga, Mariah. |
