A UBC Faculty of Education–led teacher education initiative enabled more than 300 members of the Dadaab refugee community to earn teaching credentials and become teachers in one of the world’s largest and longest-running refugee settlements in northeastern Kenya. Coordinated by Dr. Samson Nashon and Dr. Rita Irwin, and developed with partners in Kenya and Canada, it provided displaced learners with pathways to professional qualifications while strengthening local schools.
Though the initiative has since concluded, its impact continues through the work of its graduates and through ongoing Faculty of Education research on teaching and learning in contexts of displacement.
