The Faculty of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Surita Jhangiani, Associate Professor of Teaching, has been appointed as Associate Dean, Equity & Engagement, for a three-year term effective July 6, 2026.
In this role, Dr. Jhangiani will provide strategic leadership in advancing the Faculty of Education’s priorities in equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization (EDID), including its integration in the Faculty’s 2026-2031 Strategic Plan. She will provide strategic oversight to key initiatives and community programs related to SOGI Education and support those led by the Black Faculty Circle. In an ongoing effort to enhance the culture, climate, and wellbeing of the Faculty, she will guide the implementation of the UBC Wellbeing Strategic Framework, oversee projects such as the Low-Barrier Reporting System for Students and provide leadership on EDID for all faculty hiring processes.
Dr. Surita Jhangiani is the former David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education. During her three-year term as Chair, she focused on equipping educators to redress epistemic and social injustices and advised on how they could disrupt embedded power structures in service of equity. She is an advocate for open educational resources and has been the recipient of two Open Educational Resource Champion awards from the University of British Columbia.
