Six Questions with Dr. Harper Keenan
This Pride Month we are celebrating the work of Dr. Harper Keenan, the Robert Quartermain Professor of Gender and Sexuality Research in Education at UBC. Dr. Keenan’s research analyzes how adults teach children to make sense of the social world. Much of his work investigates the management, or scripting, of children’s knowledge, and ways that educators and their students might work together to interrupt that process and imagine something different. We asked Dr. Keenan six questions to learn more about his work.
Dr. Jason Ellis Publishes “A Short History of K-12 Public School Spending in British Columbia, 1970-2020”
Has spending on public education really declined over the past fifty years? The answer may be surprising. Dr. Jason Ellis (EDST) recently published a study in the Canadian Journal of Educational Administration and Policy entitled, “A Short History of K-12 Public School Spending in British Columbia, 1970-2020.” The article examines fifty years of data on public K-12 education spending and tracks how expenditure has changed over time.

Dr. Sandra Scott receives an NSERC PromoScience program grant
Dr. Scott’s Intergenerational Landed Learning Project partners children with community gardeners, educators and scientists, to grow food and learn how environmental and agricultural sciences can improve the health of the planet and ourselves. NSERC’s PromoScience program grant will help fund the project to reach more schools and elementary children, more Indigenous youth, integrate Indigenous ways, knowledges, and traditions, and provide professional development, both face-to-face and virtually, for more educators, preparing them to bring an inclusive living science component to students in their schools.
