Drs. Daniel Gamu and Michael Koehle awarded 2024 NSERC Research Program Discovery Grants

By Paula Sabti

June 14, 2024

Congratulations to Drs. Daniel Gamu and Michael Koehle, 2024 NSERC Research Program Discovery Grant recipients

Dr. Daniel Gamu and Dr. Michael Koehle have been awarded 2024 Discovery Research Program Grants by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

The NSERC Discovery Grant will support Dr. Gamu’s project “Histone Post-Translational Modifications and Tissue Adaptability,” which explores how chromatin packaging proteins regulate the ability of muscle and fat to respond to changing energy needs, including exercise and diet. This project has also been awarded an NSERC Discovery Launch Supplement, additional funding which provides timely resources to support early career researchers who are recipients of their first Discovery Grant.

Similarly, funds will support Dr. Koehle’s project, “Mechanisms of the Respiratory and Exercise Response to Ozone Air Pollution in Humans,” which explores the interactions between exercise and increased air pollution, specifically how physical activity might increase the inhaled dose of pollutants and their entry into the bloodstream, potentially amplifying their harmful effects.

Learn more about all of UBC’s NSERC Discovery Research Program Grant recipients by reading the Office of the Vice-President Research + Innovation’s announcement.

NSERC is Canada’s major federal agency responsible for funding natural sciences and engineering research. NSERC directly funds university professors, students, and Canadian companies to perform research and training. The NSERC Discovery Grants program supports ongoing research programs with long-term goals. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation at the heart of all research advances.
