Internal Search: Head, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy

The UBC Faculty of Education, one of the world’s leading faculties of its kind, invites internal applications for the position of Head of the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP).

Situated on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xwmə0kwəy’əm (Musqueam) people in Vancouver, Canada, the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for an academic administrative leadership position as Head of the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP). Reporting to the Dean, the Department Head is a member of the senior leadership team in the Faculty of Education and provides administrative, intellectual, social, and academic leadership for EDCP. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2026, for a three- or five-year term, or as mutually agreed upon between the Dean and the successful candidate.

The role of the Department Head requires that we restrict eligibility to tenured Professors, Professors of Teaching, Associate Professors, or Associate Professors of Teaching with an active appointment in EDCP.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate:

  • the ability to articulate, lead, and support a vision for the Department through consultations, discussion and deliberation with members and informed by fields of study represented in the Department;
  • knowledge of, and track record of enacting, policies and practices that seek to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, anti-racism, and social justice;
  • a relational and respectful approach to working with administrative staff;
  • evidence of support, and a clear vision for Indigenous initiatives;
  • the ability to communicate in a clear, organized, and timely way;
  • the ability to make fair and principled decisions in an ethical and transparent way;
  • a good understanding of budgets in a post-secondary institution context and experience dealing responsibly with budget issues;
  • familiarity with various collective agreements and relevant HR policies, and experience dealing with personnel matters;
  • a commitment to fostering student success through inclusive and supportive practices;
  • leadership in departmental, faculty and university-wide committees;
  • leadership in their fields of study at local, national and global levels;
  • the ability to collaboratively contribute to the operations of the Faculty of Education as a member of the leadership team, while advancing the distinctiveness and commitments of the Department; and
  • the ability to align Departmental priorities and academic goals with those of the Faculty of Education.

In the role of Department Head, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • articulate a Department vision and advance departmental programs and activities through consultation and collaboration with faculty, staff, and students;
  • address academic and operational matters strategically and effectively;
  • facilitate and promote a research culture that supports diverse, disciplinary, and interdisciplinary scholarship;
  • evaluate faculty performance and manage workload in ways that are consistent with Faculty and University policies and guidelines;
  • support faculty career advancement through a strong understanding of tenure and promotion processes and the diverse profiles and scholarship of faculty in the Department;
  • mediate conflicts and a range of personnel matters through an informed, respectful, and thoughtful approach and in compliance with established policies and collective agreements;
  • support professional development and pedagogical innovation in teaching;
  • support graduate students and graduate programs, including recruitment, retention,and engagement in Departmental, Faculty, and University activities;
  • support Departmental engagements across the Faculty, the University, and the widercommunity;
  • seek out and support new initiatives that are responsive to requests for academic programming from community organizations, school districts, government, and the wider community;
  • foster a community, culture, and climate among faculty, staff, and students, including through collegial communications and the promotion of inclusion and collaboration; and
  • engage with, advance, and lead unit and institutional strategic plans and priorities, including a vision for the Department.

Interested candidates are invited to submit an application package that includes:

  1. a vision statement for the Department that addresses administrative experience and leadership background (maximum two single-spaced pages);
  2. curriculum vitae; and
  3. an EDID statement (maximum one single-spaced page) that describes and documents your contributions to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID) through your teaching, scholarship, leadership, service, and community engagement, addressing the following three areas: (1) understanding of and knowledge about EDID; (2) track record in advancing EDID; and (3) future plans for EDID.
