This Master’s program consists of 30 course credits and is taught entirely in French, with the exception of certain readings in English (papers may be written in English). Participants must therefore be comfortable with written and spoken French. Each year of the two-year program begins with a three-week course in Montreal in July. During the remainder of the year, three courses will be taught from September to June. Students attend these courses online via teleconferencing. Action research on learning a second language or on a theme related to French as a second language forms the core of this program. Accordingly, the program will include courses in research methods as well as courses related to bilingualism and the acquisition and teaching of a second language. In addition, students will investigate a specific topic relevant to their own classrooms.
Certificate in Education – Teacher-Librarianship
Today’s teacher librarian is a dynamic teacher able to:
plan units of study collaboratively with other teachers; teach information literacy to students; develop curricula that integrates information literacy and technology; work with teachers to improve literacy learning; select quality resources and manage collections that support the curriculum, lifelong learning, and independent reading.
The diploma and certificate programs incorporate course work in educational leadership, inquiry-based learning, literacy, collaborative planning and teaching, information literacy, curriculum design and implementation, multi-media resources, and learning technologies.

Bachelor of Education (BEd) – West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program – WKTEP
The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program (WKTEP) is located in Nelson, BC and surrounding communities.
WKTEP has a strong focus on rural and small school settings, recognizing that they offer exciting educational opportunities for teachers. There is also an emphasis on place-based learning with strong ties to local communities and school districts.
The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to develop the professional qualities and effective practices for teaching in today’s complex learning environments with a strong focus on community, collaboration, and innovation.
We offer the full complement of UBC’s BEd coursework, field experiences and practica, with both a 2-week and a 10-week practicum hosted by the 4 local area school districts, as well as a 3-week community-based field experience in non-formal settings.
Elementary and secondary teacher candidates are together for some courses in on-campus, in-school and in-community settings, and experienced tutors mentor secondary teacher candidates in selected teachable subjects.
Bachelor of Education (BEd) – International Baccalaureate (IB) Option
The UBC International Baccalaureate option is Canada’s first IB-recognized teacher education program.
Teacher candidates in the UBC IB educator stream have an interest in an international education that is concept-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centred. Guided by key concepts and transdisciplinary themes, teachers create enriching, hands-on learning opportunities that promote discovery, exploration, and thinking about real-world issues. The UBC Teacher Education Program was recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) because of our strong alignment with the educational practices and underpinnings of the IB, including a focus on inquiry, reflective practice, Indigenous perspectives, and diversity in its many forms.

Bachelor of Education (BEd) – Dual Degree Option
If you are enrolled in one of the following, you can pursue a dual degree in education:
- Food, Nutrition and Health (Faculty of Land and Food Systems, BSc)
- Forest Sciences (Faculty of Forestry, BSc)
- Mathematics (Faculty of Science, BSc)
- Natural Resources Conservation – Science and Management Major (Faculty of Forestry, BSc)
- Music – Secondary, General Studies (School of Music, BMus)
- Physics (Faculty of Science, BSc)
The dual degree option will be completed in five years with reduced credits rather than the traditional four- plus one-year degree path to the BEd degree.
After completing all the requirements, teacher candidates are eligible for a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate. Admission acceptance into the program will be determined based on a review of both the applicant’s transcript and a statement of academic purpose. Entry into and continuation of a dual degree program requires that the student remain in good academic standing.
Bachelor of Education (BEd) – Elementary Option & Middle Years Option
Teacher candidates in the elementary & middle years option learn together in “cohorts” organized by a particular theme or pedagogical approach. Cohort members take courses together and are assigned practicum placements in schools within specific school districts.
Teacher candidates learn to teach all subject areas in the elementary curriculum: Kindergarten to Grade 7. While the particular theme or approach varies in each cohort, the courses are the same for all teacher candidates, with each cohort and instructor tailoring the courses in unique ways.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – Kinesiology
The School of Kinesiology offers graduate students original investigations (M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.) in biological, behavioural, and socio-cultural research in Kinesiology. The School also offers a course-based, advanced study program in the Master of Kinesiology (MKin). Students entering the M.A. program are normally expected to have a background in social sciences, while students applying to the M.Sc. program are expected to have a background in the natural or health sciences. Potential MKin students are required to have a B.Kin. or its equivalent.
Master of Science (MSc) – Kinesiology
The School of Kinesiology offers graduate students original investigations (M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.) in biological, behavioural, and socio-cultural research in Kinesiology.
