Mental illness often begins in adolescence, but many teachers are unprepared to recognize and understand mental illness. Teach Mental Health is a course for pre-service teachers, as well as current educators, to improve mental health literacy. The course, developed by TeenMentalHealth.org in partnership with St. Francis Xavier University, Western University and the University of British Columbia is online and self-paced, making it more accessible.

A conference poster entitled “A National Survey of Indian Counseling Psychologists” co-authored by Kesha Pradhan (MA student), Robinder P. Bedi, Edward Kroc (UBC MERM faculty), Mohit Bhatara (formerly a visiting faculty in Dr. Bedi’s lab at UBC and currently a faculty member at Hawassa University in Ethiopia) was awarded 2nd place in the American Psychological Association Division 52 (International Psychology) poster competition held in San Francisco, CA during the American Psychological Association annual convention.

The purpose of this Award is to recognize outstanding scholarship and promote the professional development of Emerging Scholars. Award winners are invited to attend the conference with a complimentary registration and act as facilitators, moderators, and contributors at the conference. Recipients of the Award are recognized on our website, on our social media pages, in the conference program, and formally at the conference Welcome and Closing sessions.
Emerging Scholars perform an important function as chairpersons in the parallel sessions. Duties include introducing the sessions, making sure sessions begin and end on time, and facilitating question and answer sessions. A basic knowledge of computer technology, data projectors, and PowerPoint application is required. Emerging Scholars are expected to attend the conference in its entirety. In addition to promoting important discussions among fellow conference participants and potential collaborators, Emerging Scholar Awardees also have the opportunity to present their own academic work during the parallel sessions (once accepted by the Program Development Team).
Common Ground Research Networks takes great pride in the role Emerging Scholars play in the overall success of the conference. We hope you will find this a meaningful and rewarding professional experience.
Preference given to nearly completed or recently completed PhD students, exceptional Masters students will also be considered.

Dr. Eli Puterman is the recipient of the 2018 International Society for Psychoneuroendocrinology (ISPNE) Curt Richter Award. ISPNE has awarded the prestigious Curt Richter Award for over 35 years to a distinguished line of young investigators in the field of psychoneuroendocrinology. The ceremony is held at their annual conference in September, this year in Irvine California. The award is associated with the following manuscript which is currently in press: Puterman E, Weiss J, Lin J, Schilf S, Slusher A L, Johansen K J L, Epel E S. (in press). Aerobic exercise lengthens telomeres and reduces stress in family caregivers: A randomized controlled trial – Curt Richter Award Paper 2018.

This course includes training in effective consultation for helping professionals (e.g., physicians, social workers, nurses, counsellors, psychologists). Focusing on Process Consultation, and communication, collaboration and leadership skills. There will also be a focus on enhancing motivation towards beneficial change, as well as encouraging sustainable and generalizable outcomes.
The course will include skills for working with individual, group and organizational clients as well as across settings (e.g., schools, community organizations and hospitals), with their unique timetables and goals. Students will practice case assessment and intervention via a consultee-centered approach. Allison Cloth, PhD, works from an ecological/humanist perspective, has worked as a consultant across various settings and has received advanced training in Motivational Interviewing.
