A five-year project at UBC Okanagan is transforming K–12 education by centring Indigenous knowledge and relationships to land. The project, Co-Curricular-Making: Honouring Indigenous Connections to Land, Culture and the Relational Self, brought together over 240 educators who worked alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to reimagine curriculum as a shared, evolving process. This approach helped educators move away from colonial teaching practices while building the confidence to facilitate meaningful discussions about history, culture, and identity.
The project emphasized experiential learning where students explore multiple perspectives through art, dance, drama, music, and poetry. The research, co-authored by Drs. Margaret Macintyre Latta, Bill Cohen and Danielle Lamb demonstrates how embracing uncertainty and questions as opportunities for growth helps both educators and students connect their learning to their own communities while supporting reconciliation through education.
