Tonje Molyneux receives a 2021-22 Killam Doctoral Scholarship

By Paula Sabti

November 24, 2021

Congratulations to Tonje Molyneux, recipient of a 2021-22 Killam Doctoral Scholarship

Killam Doctoral Scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to UBC graduate students

“The field of social and emotional learning (SEL) is shifting in response to calls for social justice and equity, so I’m eager to explore ways to decolonize SEL and promote social and emotional resilience.” – Tonje Molyneux

Tonje Molyneux’s academic and professional life has been dedicated to improving social, emotional and academic outcomes for children and youth. Upon completing her first master’s degree, she started a career in SEL program development and educational design. After more than ten years in that role, she pursued further graduate studies in support of a career shift to post-secondary education and educational research.

She chose to complete her doctoral studies in Human Development, Learning, and Culture at UBC Faculty of Education for three reasons:

  • The Faculty’s demonstrated commitment to advancing research in SEL and development
  • Numerous faculty members who are renowned experts in SEL and educator development
  • Recognition of the need for further research in her area of interest: improving educators’ ability to support students’ healthy social and emotional development

After completing her PhD, Tonje plans to work as a professor and researcher to advance the science and practice of SEL by developing and testing instruments, interventions and professional learning approaches that can make significant, positive differences in SEL implementation quality and student outcomes.

To learn more about her research, visit her Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies profile page.

The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships are awarded annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. Their primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Approximately 15-20 Killam Doctoral Scholarships are awared each year to the top doctoral candidates in the Affiliated Fellowships competition. Killam Doctoral Scholarships awardees on the UBC-Vancouver campus also become Four Year Fellowship holders.

To learn more about the Killam Doctoral Scholarship, visit UBC Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ Killam Doctoral Scholarships page.
