CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chairs

By domansky

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support in-depth investigations in the field of sex and gender science by promoting a cadre of discipline-specific Chairs to increase visibility and drive innovation in their respective fields. The initiative will grow the science across health research domains, fostering programs that examine the mechanisms underlying observed biological sex differences; supporting the development of methods and measures to study sex and gender; and encouraging comparative effectiveness research of gender-transformative interventions. The Chairs will investigate sex and/or gender as a primary research question within the investigator’s field of research, while also building capacity and sharing findings within and outside of their research communities.

Research Areas

This funding opportunity will only support applications that seek to grow the science of sex and gender research. Within this broad mandate, this funding opportunity will support CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chairs relevant to the following areas:

  • Early/Mid-Career Sex and Gender Science Chair on the Dynamics of Caregiving in an Aging Society: To be considered relevant for funding, applications must be from early- or mid-career investigators and align with IA’s strategic research priorities related to either of the following strategic directions: “Health and Wellness Over the Trajectory of Aging” and/or “Facing the Complex Health Challenges of an Older Population”.
  • Mid-Career Sex and Gender Science Chair in Circulatory and Respiratory Health: To be considered relevant for funding, applications must be from mid-career investigators and align with the ICRH mandate areas of Critical Care, Sleep, Blood and Blood Vessel or Respiratory Science.
  • Early/Mid-Career Sex and Gender Science Chair in Cancer Research: To be considered relevant for funding, applications must be from early- or mid-career investigators and align with ICR’s strategic research priorities.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Genetics: To be considered relevant for funding, applications must align with IG’s strategic research priorities.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Health Services and Policy Research: To be considered relevant for this funding, applicants must be either early- or mid-career and may include a health system decision-maker as a collaborator who will be directly engaged in the research program. Applications must also align with the strategic research priorities of IHSPR. (Updated: 2019-06-04)
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Indigenous Peoples’ Health: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must align with the goals, vision, mission and values of IIPH.
  • Mid-Career CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Infection and Immunity: To be considered relevant for this funding, applicants must be mid-career and applications must align with the III’s strategic research priorities. (Updated: 2019-06-04)
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must align with IMHA’s strategic research priorities.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must align with INMHA’s strategic research priorities.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Diabetes: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must focus on diabetes. To support the advancement of women and other under-represented groups, this funding opportunity encourages applicants from these groups to apply.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Healthy Cities: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must align with the strategic research priorities of the CIHR Health Cities Research Initiative.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must be relevant to the mandate of IGH.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in LGBTQI2S Wellness and Resilience: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must address the wellness and resilience of any single or combination of the following populations: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and/or Two-Spirit communities. Any investigations involving Two-Spirit people must be geographically limited to Turtle Island (North America).
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Clinical Applications of Sex Hormones: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must aim to generate evidence regarding sex hormone applications in clinical settings.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Stem Cell Research: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must address sex differences in stem cell research from the donor and recipient perspectives.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair for Studying Sex as a Biological Variable: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must aim to develop new and/or refine existing methods to study sex as a biological variable in health research.
  • CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair in Gender Methods and Measures: To be considered relevant for this funding, applications must aim to develop new and/or refine existing methods and measures to study gender as a multi-dimensional social determinant of health. Applications must address multiple facets of gender and not focus only on gender identity, for example.
