Dean Blye Frank joined Mr. Manley McLachlan, President of the BC Construction Association (pictured above with Dr. Frank), Zoe Campbell, Director of Development & Alumni Engagement, Tracy Wyman, Project Director, and executives from Urban One, the builder, for a tour of the Ponderosa Commons Phase 2 construction site, home of the upcoming Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons.
As part of the Faculty of Education’s Year of Research in Education, the Office of Graduate Programs and Research (OGPR) and the Office of the Dean co-sponsored a Distinguished Speaker event on April 14, where BC’s Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond addressed the important question of, “What can research do to promote the wellbeing of children and youth in British Columbia?”
On April 16, Dr. Frank attended a meeting of the Universitas 21 (U21) Deans of Education group, held in conjunction with the 2015 American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in Chicago. These meetings provide a forum for the discussion of issues in Education of common interest and concern across the participating U21 institutions.
While attending the 2015 American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in Chicago, Dean Frank played host to over 60 alumni and friends at a UBC Alumni Reception on April 18.
Dr. Frank joined researchers in education, health, and autism, along with representatives of the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development at a Visioning Session for Research in Autism that was held on April 23 in Richmond.
A reception was held on April 23 to recognize and honour the 2014/15 UBC Student Awards recipients, including the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP), which was selected to receive the 2014/15 Alfred Scow Award. This award is granted annually by the the Vice-President, Students Office to an undergraduate program or department that has contributed significant and positive impacts towards student development.
The External Advisory Board to the Dean held its latest meeting at Sage Bistro on April 30. Presenters for the evening included: Dr. Jean-Sébastien Blouin, Associate Professor, School of Kinesiology (KIN); Dr. Mary Bryson, Professor, Language & Literacy Education (LLED); and Dr. Bonny Norton, Professor, Language & Literacy Education (LLED).

On April 29, Dean Frank attended the UBC 25 Year Club Annual Dinner, which honoured 113 new inductees for 2015, including three Faculty of Education staff.
Dean Frank joined Dr. Wendy Carr, Director, John Yamamoto, Program Coordinator, and Rod Brown, Program Coordinator, from our UBC Vancouver Teacher Education Office at a meeting with their counterparts from UBC Okanagan at the TRU Teacher Education Roundtable on May 7-8 at Thompson Rivers University in Kamploops.
Dean Frank was pleased to present the 2015 UBC Faculty of Education Alumni Teacher Award to co-winners Dr. M.J. Moran (BEd (Elem) ’90, MEd ’02, EdD ‘08) and John David Nicks (BEd (Sec) ’98, MEd ‘02) at assemblies held at their respective schools. The Faculty of Education presents this award annually to celebrate the outstanding achievements of its alumni, who are making exceptional impacts in the lives of their students and learning communities.

There was a great turnout for the latest Tea with the Dean event, held on May 19. Faculty and staff mingled and enjoyed light refreshments and conversation.
At the Tea, Dean Frank announced that Lia Cosco, Administrative Manager for the Department of Language & Literacy Education (LLED), was the 2015 winner of the Dean’s Award for Staff Excellence. As Lia was unable to attend, Dr. Anthony Paré accepted the award on her behalf.

The Dean was pleased to welcome a visiting delegation from Zheijiang Normal University, Jinhua, China on May 22.
Dr. Frank attended a presentation by Jan Unwin, Superintendent of Graduation, Ministry of Education / Advanced Education, on May 27, where Jan delivered a powerful appeal to our teacher candidates to teach with passion, be purposeful and share that purpose, and personalize learning experiences for their students.
On May 23, Dean Frank attended the First Nations House of Learning Graduation Celebration at the UBC First Nations Longhouse. Fifty-one students, including 17 Indigenous Education graduates and honourary NITEP graduate Elder Larry Grant, participated in the largest Aboriginal student graduation celebration in the history of the Longhouse.

Host Dean Frank reconnected with alumni and colleagues at the UBC Alumni Reception held June 1 at the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) annual conference in Ottawa.
From May 29 – June 3, Dr. Frank attended the 2015 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences conference in Ottawa, and the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) conference, which was held in conjunction with Congress.
While at Congress 2015, Dean Frank joined the other attending Deans of Education at a dinner meeting with the Right Honourable Paul Martin and Dr. Carlana Lindeman, Education Program Director, Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative.
Dr. Frank chaired an ACDE panel at CSSE, “Re-imaging the PhD: New forms and futures for graduate education,” which attempted to begin a conversation around the parameters, content, and purposes of doctoral education.
The Dean’s Advisory Committee (DAC) met for their annual retreat on June 9.
On June 11-12, Dean Frank attended a meeting of the National Guidance and Implementation Committee working group on Pan-Canadian Public Health Guidance on Family Violence in Ottawa.
Dean Blye Frank co-chairs this recently established committee with Dr. Carole Herbert, former dean of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. The committee supports the implementation of a national project designed to provide a consistent knowledge base for professionals to prevent, detect and combat family violence and child abuse. The project is part of a 10‐year, $100 million investment announced by Canada’s Minister of Health Rona Ambrose in February 2015.
On June 15, Dean Frank hosted an ACDE Accord Information Session, where Drs. Iris Berger and Margo Filipenko led an informative 90-minute session on the ACDE Accord on Early Learning and Early Childhood Education.
On June 16, Dean Frank met with President of Educational Tours Canada, Matt Noble and David Hargrave-Pawson, Director of Sales in Western Canada, to explore various collaboration opportunities and develop a relationship with the Faculty of Education. Lunch was followed by a tour of the upcoming Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons.
Dr. Frank hosted a retirement celebration on June 16, where faculty, staff, and students honoured the contributions of retiring faculty members Dr. Marv Westwood, Professor, Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) and Dr. Jon Shapiro, Professor, Language and Literacy Education (LLED).
Four other faculty members are also retiring in 2015, but were unable to attend the celebration:

- Dr. Linda Farr Darling, Associate Professor, Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)
- Dr. David Coulter, Associate Professor, Educational Studies (EDST)
- Dr. Marilyn Chapman, Professor, Language and Literacy Education (LLED) and Director, IECER, Network of Centres and Institutes in Education (NCIE)
