Dr. Anusha Kassan has been appointed to the Myrne B. Nevison Professorship in School or Counselling Psychology for a three-year term commencing July 1, 2025
The Faculty of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anusha Kassan to the Myrne B. Nevison Professorship in School or Counselling Psychology, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028. This distinguished leadership position supports efforts to advance systemic and social change through research, teaching, training, mentorship, and meaningful community engagement.
Dr. Kassan is widely recognized for her visionary scholarship and deep commitment to advancing school and counselling psychology, particularly in ways that serve historically, persistently, and systemically marginalized (HPSM) youth. Her research centers on the immigration experiences of newcomer youth in Canada and the decolonization of psychology education.
During her Professorship, Dr. Kassan will continue to lead community-engaged scholarship grounded in equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. A signature initiative will involve identity-based, participatory, arts-based engagement ethnographies in both French and English schools. These studies will explore newcomer youths’ wholistic wellness, challenge dominant notions of wellbeing, and respond to their unique developmental needs. Central to her approach is the development of strong community partnerships to co-create culturally grounded, responsive supports for newcomer youth mental health and wellness.
Dr. Kassan’s work has received national recognition, including the Canadian Psychological Association’s Fellow Award (2022) and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Province of Alberta, 2023). Her strong record of research funding, scholarly publications and community collaboration highlights the wide-reaching impact of her work across education, psychology, and social justice.
The Faculty is proud to support Dr. Kassan in this important role, which reflects our ongoing commitment to inclusive, community-connected research that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth.
