Staff Spotlight – Dylan Brown

The Faculty of Education has amazing staff that help to keep the Faculty running smoothly and effectively. Each month we will be featuring a new staff member to introduce them to the Faculty.

This month we shine the spotlight on Dylan Brown BKIN Program Director, Active Kids KIN Outreach and Community Engagement.

  • How long have you worked with the Faculty of Education?
  • I started in April 2014.
  • Can you summarize what you do in the Faculty of Education?
  • I’m the Program Director of a community engagement and student development portfolio named Active Kids, for the School of Kinesiology. We engage with diverse communities through evidence based physical activity programming for children and youth, and develop rich experiential learning opportunities for UBC students. Using the expertise of the School of Kin, we do this by delivering recreational gymnastics, sport, and physical literacy based classes. We also support and collaborate with academic classes and research within the School. Our philosophy emphasizes fun, inclusive, developmentally appropriate, organized, safe, purposeful, and active movement experiences.
  • What is your favorite thing about working at UBC?
  • I love the culture of learning that all students, staff, and faculty bring to work every day. I also enjoy the feeling that I make a positive difference in people’s lives through my work.
  • What is one moment this past year that was truly memorable?
  • In 2018, I won a Presidents Staff Award for Community Engagement and got to visit the Presidents house on Marine Drive for the ceremony. It was very motivating to meet other colleagues who were also being recognized and bring my family to such a nice event.
  • What is one interesting fact about you that people may not know?
  • I do a lot of volunteer work in the blind ice hockey community.
  • If you could travel anywhere in the world next week, where would you want to go?
  • Anywhere with a beach and blue water sound good to me!
  • If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • Pulp Fiction
  • How do you like to recharge after a week at work?
  • Exercise keeps me recharged and focused. Rewarding myself with a pizza is also nice.
  • If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
  • Probably watching Michael Jordan win an NBA championship, any of his 6 would do just fine.
  • On your commute what are you most likely listening to?
  • In the morning the radio as it is easy to wake up to. After work I like something more upbeat, 90’s hip hop.
  • What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
  • Sports is my main go to. I play hockey, golf, volleyball, basketball, and recently I picked up tennis at UBC. I also enjoy reading, going to the movies, and learning how to fix things around the house.

  • What is your most healthy habit?
  • Recently I’ve been adding a lot of avocados to my breakfast…delicious!
