A prize worth approximately $500 has been endowed in honour of the lifetime contributions of Professor Ted T. Aoki to recognize an excellent dissertation in the area of curriculum inquiry written by a doctoral student in the Faculty of Education. All Faculty of Education PhD supervisors are invited to nominate a PhD graduate whose work resides in the field of curriculum for the Ted T. Aoki Prize. The Ted T. Aoki Prize for Outstanding Dissertation in Curriculum Studies award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Eligibility
The nominee must have successfully defended and submitted the thesis to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between 1 January and 31 December of the year for which the award is being given.
Nominations
Supervisors interested in nominating a PhD graduate should send the following documentation as a single PDF file to graduate.educ@ubc.ca by 4:00 pm, Thursday, February 22, 2024. The nominee must have defended between January 1 and December 31, 2023.
- Nominee cover letter explaining how the dissertation is in the tradition of Aoki’s work
- A letter of support from the thesis supervisor*
- Copy of External Examiner’s report
- Copy of the Chair’s report
- A Table of Contents of the Thesis
- An excerpt from and/or description of the thesis research, in simple language (not exceeding 20 pages, excluding references)
*In their letters, both nominees and nominators are encouraged to point to how the dissertation is in the tradition of Aoki’s work, broadly construed as curriculum inquiry (cf. Pinar, W.F. and Irwin, R.L. [2004]. Curriculum in a new key: the collected works of Ted. T. Aoki. Mahwah: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates)
