International Professional Development Program For Secondary School English Language Teachers

Contemporary English language pedagogy integrated with English for English teaching proficiency.

Boosting students’ English language proficiency requires teachers who are competent in classroom English, have contemporary pedagogical knowledge and skills, and are aware of global sociolinguistic perspectives on for example, world Englishes.

Recognizing this heightening demand on working teachers, UBC Faculty of Education has developed a hybrid, internationally-minded, professional development program. It is aimed at in-service, non-native English speaking teachers of English as a foreign language at secondary schools around the world. Participants experience three-weeks’ learning at UBC campus, followed by 12 weeks of online learning after returning home.

The program is offered collaboratively through the Faculty’s Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) and English Language Institute (ELI). Upon completion of the program you will receive a certificate.

Develop Your Academic Writing, Reading, Speaking, & Listening Skills

English for Academic Purposes Online offers the same excellent teaching, curriculum and daily social activities as our on campus program. Take part in live chats, video presentations and interactive group projects!

This program is for students who want to develop their academic writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. Many students in this program are hoping to study at a university where English is the language of instruction.

The program lines up with the UBC academic calendar to allow for an easy transition for students starting a UBC degree program.

You will be tested online in advance to ensure your understanding of English meets the minimum requirements.

Upon completion of each 8-week program you will receive a certificate and transcript.

Who It’s For

English for Academic Purposes is for students who want to develop their academic writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills and want the convenience of online learning! Many students in this program are hoping to study at a university where English is the language of instruction.

Gain the English-Language Skills & Confidence to Succeed

English for Academic Purposes is designed to give you the English-language skills and confidence to succeed in an academic setting while also helping you to understand the North American classroom culture of universities and colleges.

This program is for students who are at an intermediate or advanced level of English and want to develop their academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

The program is multi-level so you can progress each term to the next level! It is designed to continue to challenge you as your English skills improve.

This program meets UBC’s English Language Admission Standard (Certificate in English Language) with successful completion of two courses at the 600 level.

Upon completion of each 8-week program you will receive a certificate and transcript.

UBC Decolonization Tour | August 13, 2022

UBC Decolonization Tour

The Decolonization Tour is conversational, participation-driven, and we encourage visitors to read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action in advance of the tour for grounding and context. The tour lasts about 90 minutes, beginning in front of the Belkin Art Gallery (1825 Main Mall), and takes place outside, moving between Main Mall, East Mall, and West Mall. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle and dress for the weather. The ground is mostly paved and fairly level, but if you or anyone in your group have mobility concerns, please let us know.

For English as an Additional Language Learners

Develop Your Business English Skills in 3 Weeks!
Improve your speaking fluency and listening skills using business-themed topics and materials through our 3-week Business English program.

You will develop your business English skills by writing emails, memos and business letters, role-playing meetings, and discussing case studies. Class activities include group discussions, guest speakers, student presentations, and field trips.

You will be immersed in a rich English-language environment where you can contribute your expertise and collaborate with fellow students. Classes run all day from Monday to Thursday and half day on Friday.

Upon completion of the program you will receive a certificate and transcript.

Who It’s For

Business English is for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English and wish to improve their speaking fluency and listening ability in business settings. Most students have some interest or background in business, either through study or work experience.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has announced the latest Discovery Grant Program recipients. Congratulations to all successful applicants in the Faculty of Education.

The NSERC Discovery Grants program assists in:

  • Promoting and maintaining a diversified base of high-quality research capability in the natural sciences and engineering in Canadian universities
  • Fostering research excellence
  • Providing a stimulating environment for research training

The Discovery Grants program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances.
