Call for Nominations: 2019 Murray Elliott Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Teacher Education Program

This award honours full-time and sessional faculty, staff and other persons associated with the Faculty of Education who have made an outstanding contribution to the Teacher Education Program at UBC. The recipient will receive a plaque along with a Pendleton blanket. In addition, the recipient’s name will be displayed in the Faculty alongside other recipients of the award.

The nomination package should include three letters of nomination that address the following criteria:

The recipient will have shown exceptional dedication, leadership skills, and commitment to the ongoing improvement of the UBC Teacher Education Program over an extended period of time.
A detailed overview of the nominee’s accomplishments and/or contribution to the Teacher Education Program.

Nomination in one year does not restrict the individual from being nominated in subsequent years; however, an individual may only receive the award once.

SPARC’s SSHRC Partnership Development Grants Internal Peer Review Service

DEADLINES

August 19th: Email Erica Machulak at the UBC SPARC office to register for SPARC’s voluntary internal review/feedback by peers of drafts of SSHRC Partnership Development Grants proposals.

August 30: Email Erica Machulak IPR form and brief summary (max 1 page).

Late September (TBA): Email Erica Machulak full draft of proposal.

October (TBA): Receive feedback.

November 1: Submit full proposal to Erica Machulak for review by SPARC staff. In these reviews, proposals will be finely edited by a member of the SPARC team. Applicants have the option of submitting their full proposal, or various modules.

UBC 2019 Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters

The UBC Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters program is designed to enable leading researchers to work closely together as a unit on problems that transcend the traditional boundaries associated with departments, institutions, and funding agencies. These awards are specifically targeted at catalyzing advanced research initiatives with the expectation that awards will be used to enable the cluster to have more significant impact than otherwise possible. Researchers from all disciplines are invited to apply for funding.

There will only be one competition in the fall for 2019 GCRC awards. New clusters and clusters funded by previous GCRC competitions are eligible to apply.

In order to submit an application to the Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters competition, research teams must submit a short Notice of Intent (NOI) to apply by 5:00pm on September 23rd, 2019.

NEW FOR 2019 COMPETITION

In response to the feedback received following broad consultation, the following changes have been made to the 2019 GCRC competition:

Option to select a 1 or 2 year grant term. Two year projects will not receive additional funding and will be required to spend at least 30% of awarded funds by the end of the first year. Applicants selecting a two-year budget term will not be eligible to apply to a potential 2020 GCRC competition;
Option to apply for a trainee stipend supplement ($15k emerging, $30k established) to support research projects that advance the cluster’s goals and outcomes;
Funds will flow in April 1, 2020 to align with UBC’s fiscal year. Currently funded clusters that are successful in the 2019 GCRC competition will be eligible to apply for 2 months of bridge funding to cover any shortfalls caused by fiscal year alignment.

Dean Blye Frank to Chair a Task Force Dealing with Cross-Campus Collaboration

Dean Blye Frank is chairing a new task force on cross-campus collaboration between UBCV and UBCO. Dr. Frank will work with deans from both campuses to co-create an action plan for enhanced collaboration.

Register for the Enhanced CWL

The Enhanced CWL is being implemented across the UBC Campus, and everyone in the Faculty of Education is encouraged to register in the coming months, before the absolute deadline of October 1st.

The Enhanced CWL is a way to keep our information more secure through multi-factor authentication (MFA), providing an effective way to prevent unauthorized access to information. Your current CWL and password are the first way of authenticating, and there are a number of options to select for your second authentication device. Take a look at the image below and then head to the link above to login, register, and enroll your devices. If you have any questions, contact your Unit's representative (via Administrative Managers), Educational Technology Support (ETS), or directly with UBC IT.

New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Exploration Grants

The objective of the Exploration stream is to generate opportunities for researchers to conduct high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research not easily supported through funding opportunities currently offered by the Tri-agencies. It seeks to inspire highly innovative projects that defy current research paradigms, propose a unique scientific direction, bring disciplines together beyond the traditional disciplinary approaches, and/or use different perspectives to solve existing problems.

Up to $125,000 per year (including indirect costs)

SPARC SSHRC Insight Grants Internal Review

UBC researchers can gain a competitive edge in grant competitions by participating in SPARC’s internal review program, offered for several Tri-Council funding programs, including SSHRC’s Insight Grants. SPARC connects researchers across disciplines, organizational units and locations to provide an expert peer review that mimics formal multi-disciplinary review panels.
