University of British Columbia professor Annette Henry’s role as a mentor isn’t always limited to the students in her classes. Dr. Henry, who has written about the experience of black female professors in Canada, and is black herself, has also had students she has never taught seek her out.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to identify the assumptions of China’s civiceducation and compare these assumptions to the key concepts involved in PauloFreire’s critical pedagogy, particularly his ideas of (1) critical consciousness, (2)humanization, and (3) dialogue. Based on the specific social and political contexts inwhich each of these pedagogies arose, the thesis will explore the limitations andpotential of applying Freire’s critical pedagogy to enhance university students’critical and civic consciousness in China.

To this end, the thesis will present a comparative study of Freirean criticalpedagogy and the Chinese culture of pedagogy in order to explore the followingquestions: What are the key concepts that support Freire’s conception oftransformative education? What are the key concepts of China’s civic education?How do Freire’s and China’s concepts relate or compare to each other? How mightFreirean ideas of critical consciousness and social transformation be informed orextended in relation to the challenges posed by China’s conception of civiceducation? What challenges or implications arise when attempting to use orimplement Freire’s ideas of critical pedagogy within China’s higher education system(e.g., to teach for transformation)?
These questions will be answered by exploring the points of commonality anddifference between the worldviews framing the civic education in China’s highereducation institutions and Freire’s critical pedagogy.

On Monday, June 4, Rahela Nayebzadah successfully defended her dissertation titled “Red Tears of Pearl: Making Space for Afghan-Canadian Muslim Diasporas in Postcolonial Literature“.

The supervisory committee comprised: Dr. Carl Leggo, Dr. Theresa Rogers, and Dr. Paul Matthew St. Pierre (SFU, English Department).

Dr. Mona Gleason Receives Two Awards from the Canadian Historical Association

Dr. Gleason’s article “Avoiding the Agency Trap: Caveats for Historians of Children, Youth, and Education”, published in History of Education won the  won the 2018 Neil Sutherland Prize for Best Article from the History of Children and Youth Group. Her article “‘Knowing Something I Was Not Meant to Know’: Exploring Vulnerability, Sexuality, and Childhood, 1900-1950”, published in Canadian Historical Review, won the 2018 Best Article Award from the Canadian Committee on the History of Sexuality.

Fall 2018 New Course Offering – Living Language: Science and Society

In September, the first ever University-wide course in Language Sciences.  Living Language: Science and Society is a new three-credit course and will cover the scientific study of language as it applies to all domains of human life, in the creation and acquisition of spoken language through writing systems, texts of all kinds, arts, culture, science, and technology.

The course is designed as an upper level course and co-taught by Professor Janet F. Weker from Psychology and Mark Turin from Anthropology & First Nations and Endangered Languages.

Living Language is cross-listed as APSC 402, ASTU 402, FRST 402, LFS 402, LLED 402, and
PHAR 402. Enrolment for this course will be limited to 40 students so make sure to check it out early to get your spot.

PhD graduate Anar Rajabali is the 2018 recipient of the ARTS (Arts Researchers and Teachers) PhD Graduate Award at CSSE.

Here’s what the award committee wrote about her thesis:

PhD award: Anar Rajabali. (Re)turning to the Poetic I/Eye: Towards a Literacy of Light
Dr. Rajabali’s dissertation is a beautifully written meditation on poetry, spirituality, and the quest for knowledge. It enacts its project through a seamless merger of poetry (textual and spoken word), song, philosophy, autobiography, and curriculum theorizing, extending our understandings of each of these genres and modes in the process. As an accomplished poet researching poetry through poetry, Rajabali demonstrates the possibilities of a/r/tography as a mode of scholarship that extends the bounds of the dissertation and academic knowledge production.
