Indigenous teachers play a significant role in creating environments that are culturally responsive, empowering, inclusive of Indigenous knowledges, and promote decolonization and educational sovereignty in classrooms and communities. To build on these strengths, the Faculty of Education hosted a three-day symposium that brought together Indigenous teacher education programs around the world.

Congratulations to the School of Kinesiology’s Dr. Guy Faulkner and his research team, who were recently awarded Michael Smith Health Research funding for their project Group Sense Making and Model Building for Mapping Systems for the Promotion of Population Physical Activity in British Columbia.

Dr. Johanna Sam’s team at UBC is listening to the experiences of diverse youth to help them develop coping strategies for cyberbullying. While young people may not use the term “cyberbullying,” they sure know when somebody is mean to them online. That can take different forms, from having an unwanted photo of them shared on social media to being excluded from a group chat.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has announced the latest Discovery Grant Program recipients. Congratulations to all successful applicants in the Faculty of Education.

The Wall Scholars Catalyst program provides 12 UBC scholars with the opportunity to "build connections, cultivate relationships and initiate collaborations that engage with the urgency, scale and complexity of the Climate and Nature Emergency." The program seeks to provide a platform for academics to explore innovative ways of thinking and engage in interdisciplinary research.

Newly appointed managing editors Dr. Johanna Sam (Tsilhqot’in Nation) and Dr. Shannon Leddy (Métis Nation) are pleased to announce the return of the Canadian Journal of Native Education (CJNE) as an Open Access online journal. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has announced the latest Insight Grant, Partnership Development Grant and Aid to Scholarly Journals Grant recipients. Congratulations to all successful applicants in the Faculty of Education.

Congratulations to Dr. Harper Keenan, who has been awarded a 2022 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. The fellowship grants support early career scholars to make significant scholarly and research contributions to the field of education. The program also develops the careers of its recipients through professional development activities involving National Academy of Education members.

The Faculty of Education extends congratulations to Distinguished University Scholar and Professor Dr. Patricia Vertinsky, recipient of the Roberta J. Park Award for Scholarly Distinction awarded by the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH). Dr. Vertinsky is recognized for her exceptional research contributions enhancing the understanding and appreciation of sport from a historical perspective.

Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy is a new book edited by Drs. Awad Ibrahim, Tamari Kitossa, Malinda Smith and Handel Kashope Wright, released in February 2022. It contains essays which focus on Black life in academia and offer new historical, social and cultural insights into what it means to be a Black academic.
