The Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP), within UBC’s Faculty of Education, one of the world’s leading faculties of its kind, invites applications for the position of Lecturer (part-time 50%) and Coordinator.
Situated on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəyəm (Musqueam) people, the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a part-time (50%) Lecturer position in the area of Indigenous Education. The appointment is expected to begin on August 1, 2026 (or as mutually agreed upon between the University and the successful candidate) for a four-year term, with the first year being a probationary period. This position will teach classes, coordinate the program, and provide student support.
The successful candidate must possess a Master’s degree and have, or be eligible for, a valid Teaching Certificate in BC. Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching experience in K-12 schools and have a track record of being approachable, compassionate, and organized in their work with students.
The successful candidate must be able to teach core NITEP classes at the UBC Vancouver Point Grey campus for students in all years of the program, including curriculum relevant to Indigenous Education, and to supervise observation placements. The successful candidate must also be able to carry out coordination responsibilities, which involve problem-solving and providing accurate information regarding required academic courses, to be carried out in communication and collaboration with other Field Centre Coordinators.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Coordinate and supervise students’ educational observation placements, including communication with schools and sponsor teachers.
- Provide access to and oversee student service supports, including tutoring, counseling, cultural, and financial support.
- Organize local student-oriented events that contribute to student development in the NITEP program (e.g., NITEP orientation, mentoring, workshops, monthly lunches, and other program-related events).
- Assist with planning for the annual NITEP Student Gathering.
- Organize an academic bridging series for incoming Indigenous students.
- Liaise and work cooperatively with other NITEP Field Centres, Field Centre partners, local First Nations, Indigenous organizations, and local K-12 schools.
- Assist with local recruitment efforts and career fairs, including those through (1) Strengthening Connections visits; (2) local community career fairs; (3) local high schools; and; (4) local post-secondary institutions.
- Assist applicants with applications and registrations in collaboration with NITEP staff.
- Collaborate and support the participation of Elders and Knowledge Keepers as part of NITEP programming (coursework, transitions program, mental health and wellness program).
- Coordinate on the land opportunities with local First Nations.
The annual workload for the position is 15 credits (equivalent to five courses), which will include teaching and coordination responsibilities, as assigned by the NITEP Director.
This position is subject to final budgetary approval. The expected pay range is $55,000 – $60,000 per annum. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and by their placement on the career progress scale within the Faculty of Education.
