UBC Faculty of Education to Lead New Provincial Teacher Mentorship Pilot Program

By jmills9

March 31, 2025

The Faculty of Education in the University of British Columbia has been selected to lead British Columbia’s new provincial Teacher Mentorship Pilot Program (TMPP).

The UBC Faculty of Education has been selected to lead British Columbia’s new provincial Teacher Mentorship Pilot Program (TMPP), a key initiative of the Ministry of Education and Child Care’s K-12 Workforce Plan being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. Designed to enhance teacher retention, the TMPP seeks to build a supportive, inclusive, and flexible province-wide mentorship network that fosters professional growth and lifelong learning, empowering B.C.’s public-school teachers to cultivate engaged, rewarding and sustainable careers.

The pilot program will provide educators at all career stages with teacher-led mentorship opportunities focused on knowledge exchange, skill development, and community-building, with an emphasis on supporting new teachers, or teachers new to their role. The TMPP will also support existing mentorship initiatives in school districts by helping to coordinate efforts, develop resources and facilitate local capacity-building.

To implement this plan, the UBC Faculty of Education will establish a provincial Teacher Mentorship Office to oversee program delivery. This office will include representation from B.C. teachers and serve as a central hub, collaborating with educators, school districts and sector partners to develop research-informed, decolonized, and English/French bilingual resources. Offerings will include online self-paced courses, professional learning, and wellness and networking opportunities.

Additionally, the TMPP will provide targeted support for underrepresented groups, including teachers in rural and remote communities, First Nations teachers, and French-speaking teachers within Francophone and French Immersion programs. Partnerships with select school districts will cultivate tailored mentorship approaches that address local needs and align with provincial goals.

“The UBC Faculty of Education is excited to lead this transformative initiative, which reimagines how teachers are supported throughout their careers. We look forward to working closely with educators, school districts, and sector partners across the province to build a strong, inclusive, and connected mentorship network that responds to real-world needs and creates lasting benefits for B.C.’s teachers, learners, families and communities.”
– Dr. Jan Hare, Dean, UBC Faculty of Education

As a global leader in collaborative, responsive, innovative, and inclusive education, and as B.C.’s largest and most comprehensive education faculty, the UBC Faculty of Education is uniquely positioned to lead this project. We bring deep research expertise, strong field partnerships, and a proven track record in mentorship and accessible professional learning. In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Child Care, a project Steering Committee comprised of provincial educational partners, and a Working Group focused on First Nations teacher recruitment and retention, we are well-equipped to drive collaborative and meaningful change.

Insights from this pilot program will help inform potential future programming, further strengthening connections and fostering a vibrant, supportive, and diverse teaching and learning community for all.
