Statement on the Nova Scotia mass shooting

Dear colleagues,

As dean, and as a Nova Scotian, it is with great sadness that I share that Lisa Kierstead McCully, the teacher who was killed two days ago in Nova Scotia, was a BEd alumna who had completed her teacher education program at UBC in 1997. A number of you would have taught Lisa, and at least one colleague has reported that she was a wonderfully positive person who showed real leadership while in the program. All reports from the media indicate that she loved teaching, was well respected by her community and adored by her students.

We mourn for her loss and send our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and students.
