Dr. Guofang Li, a UBC education professor and Canada Research Chair in Transnational/Global Perspectives of Language and Literacy Education of Children and Youth, was interviewed by The Tyee about the need to include professional learning for early childhood teachers to better support them to teach and care for children from diverse linguistic, cultural, racial, and economic backgrounds in the BC government’s $1 billion investment in universal childcare programs in the next three years.

Please join the Faculty of Education in congratulating Dr. Sterett Mercer on his reappointment as the Chris Spencer Foundation Professor in Dyslexia, effective July 1, 2018.
This Professorship is charged with the mandate of pursuing a research program focused on dyslexia, while providing leadership and coordination of research involving graduate students and faculty within the Faculty of Education and across UBC. He will work with school communities to advance programming for children with learning disabilities, adapt graduate courses and seminars to focus on the current state of dyslexia research, and explore new avenues of study by organizing conferences for students and faculty that bring international scholars in the field to campus.
We thank Dr. Mercer for all of his accomplishments and advancements in the area of dyslexia over the past three years and offer our sincerest congratulations on his well-deserved reappointment.

On July 4 and 5, 2018, Educational Technology Support (ETS) will host its fifth TEC Expo event. The Technology Enhanced Classroom (TEC) Expo is an annual event designed to showcase and celebrate creative and innovative uses of technology in face-to-face, blended, and online classrooms within the Faculty of Education. A portion of the TEC Expo event is dedicated to Makerspaces. The Makerspaces provide opportunities to share hands-on making, and coding activities with the audience.
Interested in Presenting?
We are encouraging instructors and students to present educational technologies they are passionate about. We are also including a hands-on makerspace where facilitators and audience have the opportunity to experiment with digital tools and engage in both digital and non-digital creative making.

Please be advised of upcoming facility changes that will be made on the third floor of the Neville Scarfe Building. As of April 1, 2018, we will be closing meeting rooms 304A and 304C. They will be undergoing renovations to be re-purposed to better support our growing Office of the Senior Advisor International.
After April 1, the available meeting rooms in the Neville Scarfe Building will be rooms 308A, 309C (until 4:30 p.m.) and 310. If you have a meeting booked in either 304A or 304C after April 1, Alex Smiciklas and Patrick Armstrong of the Dean’s Office will be contacting you to help arrange for a suitable room replacement. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

News 1130 reported on the Chan Gunn Pavilion, a new sports and physiotherapy facility at UBC.
The two-storey 20,000 square-foot space includes a rehabilitation gym, research space, offices and clinic rooms. It will also be used by faculty and students from the School of Kinesiology, which is part of the Faculty of Education, to explore the body’s response to exercise.

Congratulations to Dr. Dónal O’Donoghue, professor in the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy (EDCP), who has been selected to receive the 2018 International Edwin Ziegfeld Award. Presented by The United States Society for Education through Art, the International Edwin Ziegfeld Award honours a colleague from outside of the United States who has made contributions of international significance to art education.
This prestigious award will be presented to Dr. O’Donoghue at the National Art Education Association Convention in Seattle in March 2018.

UBC’s favourite departmental funding program is back! Applications are now being accepted for the Healthy Workplace Initiatives Program (HWIP).
In support of UBC departments and units that are interested in promoting wellbeing in the workplace, the HWIP provides start-up funds for health-related activities. The program has previously funded grassroots initiatives such as yoga classes, health challenges, mental health training and creative activities.
In 2017, the HWIP funded the following in Vancouver and the Okanagan:
- Seven bike share programs
- Six fitness classes
- Six health challenges
- Four patio gardens
- Two mental health programs
- Two arts-based projects
- 12 innovative new ideas
Do you and your colleagues have a great idea for boosting the health and wellbeing of your team? Need a little financial assistance to supplement department resources? Consider applying today. Deadline for applications is April 18, 2018.

Huffington Post reported that UBC has several top-ranked programs in the world, according to higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds.
UBC has three programs that rank in the top 10: geography, library and information management, and sports-related subjects, which includes the School of Kinesiology.
