We offer specialized, individualized and interdisciplinary graduate programs in French immersion, French as a Second or Foreign Language [FSL, FFL], Asia-Pacific and the other modern language education. These programs involve study in second language curriculum, assessment, second language acquisition, bilingualism and intercultural education.
Although there are formal course requirements for the advanced degrees, students in the graduate programs are encouraged, with the aim of individualizing each program of studies, to take graduate courses in the Departments of Anthropology/Sociology, Psychology, and Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts, as well as in the Departments of Educational Studies, Curriculum and Instruction, Administrative Education, and Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education. In this way, each program is individually tailored to suit students’ talents and interests. The MEd and MA degrees are available on a part- or full-time basis and have no residency requirement.

This Master’s program consists of 30 course credits and is taught entirely in French, with the exception of certain readings in English (papers may be written in English). Participants must therefore be comfortable with written and spoken French. Each year of the two-year program begins with a three-week course in Montreal in July. During the remainder of the year, three courses will be taught from September to June. Students attend these courses online via teleconferencing. Action research on learning a second language or on a theme related to French as a second language forms the core of this program. Accordingly, the program will include courses in research methods as well as courses related to bilingualism and the acquisition and teaching of a second language. In addition, students will investigate a specific topic relevant to their own classrooms.

The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program (WKTEP) is located in Nelson, BC and surrounding communities.
WKTEP has a strong focus on rural and small school settings, recognizing that they offer exciting educational opportunities for teachers. There is also an emphasis on place-based learning with strong ties to local communities and school districts.
The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to develop the professional qualities and effective practices for teaching in today’s complex learning environments with a strong focus on community, collaboration, and innovation.
We offer the full complement of UBC’s BEd coursework, field experiences and practica, with both a 2-week and a 10-week practicum hosted by the 4 local area school districts, as well as a 3-week community-based field experience in non-formal settings.
Elementary and secondary teacher candidates are together for some courses in on-campus, in-school and in-community settings, and experienced tutors mentor secondary teacher candidates in selected teachable subjects.

The UBC International Baccalaureate Educator stream is Canada’s first IB-recognized teacher education program.
Teacher candidates in the UBC IB educator stream have an interest in an international education that is concept-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centred. Guided by key concepts and transdisciplinary themes, teachers create enriching, hands-on learning opportunities that promote discovery, exploration, and thinking about real-world issues. The UBC Teacher Education Program was recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) because of our strong alignment with the educational practices and underpinnings of the IB, including a focus on inquiry, reflective practice, Indigenous perspectives, and diversity in its many forms.

If you are enrolled in one of the following, you can pursue a dual degree in education:
- Food, Nutrition and Health (Faculty of Land and Food Systems, BSc)
- Forest Sciences (Faculty of Forestry, BSc)
- Mathematics (Faculty of Science, BSc)
- Natural Resources Conservation – Science and Management Major (Faculty of Forestry, BSc)
- Music – Secondary, General Studies (School of Music, BMus)
- Physics (Faculty of Science, BSc)
The dual degree option will be completed in five years with reduced credits rather than the traditional four- plus one-year degree path to the BEd degree.
After completing all the requirements, teacher candidates are eligible for a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate. Admission acceptance into the program will be determined based on a review of both the applicant’s transcript and a statement of academic purpose. Entry into and continuation of a dual degree program requires that the student remain in good academic standing.

Teacher candidates in the elementary & middle years option learn together in “cohorts” organized by a particular theme or pedagogical approach. Cohort members take courses together and are assigned practicum placements in schools within specific school districts.
Teacher candidates learn to teach all subject areas in the elementary curriculum: Kindergarten to Grade 7. While the particular theme or approach varies in each cohort, the courses are the same for all teacher candidates, with each cohort and instructor tailoring the courses in unique ways.

Are you interested in coaching science? If so, the preferred degree path is the non-thesis MKin degree. Some recent sample major paper titles are: “Exercise Considerations for the Prenatal Client”, “Goal Setting for Collegiate Golf”, and “Injury Prevention in Amateur Ice Hockey”. The faculty member most closely associated with this degree is Dr. Maria Gallo. Information on the program structure is available on our Master’s Program page.
