Project Summary

Our Next Act: Theatre, Research, and Social Justice is a podcast series showcasing conversations between graduate students exploring Research-based Theatre (RbT), and professional theatre artists specializing in creating theatre with diverse communities. The episodes allow for conversations about creating RbT projects which are accessible, equitable and actively engage in social justice practices. This podcast series will serve as an arts-based methodological resource for advancing awareness and understanding of EDID matters in thesis and dissertation projects that use RbT. Matching funding for this project is provided by the UBC Research-based Theatre Lab.

Project Summary

This project creates space for Bachelor of Education teacher candidates to consider the complexities of EDID initiatives—in particular, Indigenous Education in BC and SOGI 123—and how our positionalities impact the ways we incorporate them into our teaching practice. It involves three components: (1) a self-reflective reading and writing phase, focused around selected readings; (2) a writing workshop, and (3) the publication of an edited zine, consisting of writing by Bachelor of Education students to be shared with the wider teaching community.

Project Summary

Inspired by the concept of the Human Library, this event will offer a space for learning exchanges around experiences of race and racism in pedagogical contexts. In the event, teachers from different backgrounds will narrate their story to a small group of interested “readers.” Like visiting a library collection, participants will move between the “books” allowing each teacher’s story to function as a stimulus for personal reflection and group discussion. The target audience is Faculty of Education students interested in the practice of antiracist pedagogy.

Dr. Amy Parent is appointed member of the Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research

Congratulations to Dr. Amy Parent, who will serve as a member of the Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research. As such, Dr. Parent and her colleagues will advise presidents of Canada’s three federal research funding agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada—and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Dr. Parent is Nisga’a from the Nass Valley of Northwestern British Columbia on her mother’s side of the family. Her Nisga’a name is Noxs Ts’aawit (Mother of the Raven Warrior Chief) and she belongs to the Ganada (frog) clan from the village of Laxgalts’ap. Dr. Parent is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education, a member of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Canada Working Group on Indigenous Land Based Education and a board member of the Access to Media Education Society.

The Canada Research Coordinating Committee, which advances federal research priorities as well as the policies and programs of Canada’s research funding agencies and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, established the Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research to advise on the implementation of the interagency strategic plan, Setting new directions to support Indigenous research and training in Canada 2019–2022.

Members of the Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research will monitor the progress of the strategic plan, identifying issues and opportunities and recommending approaches to support the successful implementation of the plan.

An external, expert committee of Indigenous scholars and community members selected Dr. Parent to serve on the Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research, which includes members from universities and scholarly institutes across Canada.

Scarfe Construction News

Upgrades & Renovations: Level 3 offices
Neville Scarfe Lecture Block

Update: July 7, 2022

Construction is proceeding along the expected schedule. Electrical and framing work are complete, and drywalling is underway. Millwork is being installed later in July, with glazing to be completed approximately four weeks after the millwork. We anticipate some delays in the delivery of doors, door hardware, and AV equipment, which may impact the anticipated completion date of the project.

Construction: beginning April 11, 2022

Level 3 offices in the Lecture Block of the Neville Scarfe Building are undergoing renovations to reallocate and refresh the current space.

What to expect during construction

  • Increased noise at the start of the project during demolition.
  • Noisy work during new wall and millwork installation.
  • Regular construction noise throughout the project.
  • Contractors entering and exiting the building.

Delivery and disposal of materials will occur via stairs and the elevator. Floors and surfaces along the route will be protected. A laydown area and disposal bin will be located near the service entry at the west side of the building.

Leadership and Operational Changes in ETS and PDCE

The Faculty of Education announces the following changes in the leadership and operational structure of the Educational Technology Support (ETS) and Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE) units.

As of April 1, 2022, ETS and PDCE began operating as independent units, with separate budgets and leadership. Dr. Natasha Boškić, Director, Learning Design, leads the Educational Technology Support (ETS), reporting directly to Dr. Teresa Dobson, Associate Dean, Academic and Innovation. Lynne Tomlinson, Assistant Dean, leads the Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE) unit, also reporting directly to Dr. Dobson.

As of May 1, 2022, Dr. Mark Edwards will assume the role of Director, Academic Initiatives, working closely with Dr. Dobson on many projects, including process and policy development; implementation of Indigenous-focused programs, including the new MEd in Indigenous Education; and the Ministry of Education-funded expansion of seats in our early childhood program.

Educational Technology Support (ETS)

Dr. Natasha Boškić, Director, Learning Design, leads the Educational Technology Support (ETS) unit. Dr. Boškić reports to Dr. Teresa Dobson, Associate Dean, Academic and Innovation.

ETS provides specialized services in learning design and educational technology and open access support to the entire Faculty. It works in partnership with Faculty academic and non-academic units and staff to co-create innovative, inspiring and motivating teaching and learning spaces with the use of digital applications, and mobilize knowledge and research.

Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE)

Lynne Tomlinson, Assistant Dean, leads the Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE) unit and reports to Dr. Teresa Dobson, Associate Dean, Academic and Innovation.

PDCE is a primary source of innovative, flexible, responsive programming within the Faculty. From building the capacity of educators for student success, to transforming the way educational professionals develop and implement systems and change, it is the bridge that connects the Faculty and the field. All offerings are curated and led by UBC faculty and reflect the Faculty’s overarching commitment to the pursuit of excellence in research, learning, and engagement. Through its faculty and field-based partnerships, PDCE serves as a vital link between the university and community.
