Self-Care September
The start of a new academic year is a busy time for students, faculty, and staff. Our Self-Care September initiative aims to keep us healthy, focused, and connected with each other throughout the year.
Self-Care September is a Faculty-wide initiative with a special focus on building community as we boost our own wellness. Self-care is not selfish. Nurture yourself, so you will have the mental and emotional energy for all aspects of your life. This month, we are following the Thrive 5 model: move more, sleep more, eat well, give back, and connect socially.
During the month of September, we’re also implementing practices that support workplace wellness. Download our Health Workplace Practices document.
Apply the Thrive 5
There are many ways to foster and maintain good mental health. As we navigate the ongoing reality of living through a pandemic, you may feel stressed, isolated or worried. Practising self-care can help alleviate these feelings.
UBC’s Thrive 5 program identifies five simple, easy-to-implement ways to support your mental health. Each week of our Self-Care September will focus on a different aspect of the Thrive 5.

Education Crosses Canada
Join the Faculty of Education’s Self-Care Collective as we figuratively make our way from Vancouver to Halifax during the month of September! By participating in and tracking Thrive 5-based activities, our collective will accumulate points. Points convert into virtual kilometres, so we can “travel” across Canada together as we journey toward wellness.
How can I participate?
Simple! Just use the Scavify app to log activities such as:
- Share a photo of an extra serving of vegetables you added to a meal.
- Share a photo of you in nature.
- List some ways you have kept “in touch” with others.
- Share a playlist or podcast that you helps you wind down.
What do I do next?
- Download scavify.
- Create an account.
- Search “Self-Care September” and join for free.
- Take part in fun activities that will help you explore wellbeing!
