Dr. Donald McKenzie is appointed to the Order of Canada

Dr. Donald (Don) McKenzie, OC, MSM, Professor (Retired), Faculty of Education, is appointed to the Order of Canada as an Officer (OC), an honour bestowed in recognition of achievement and merit of a high degree, especially service to Canada or to humanity at large. Don has made considerable contributions to exercise and sports medicine, and his work with breast cancer survivors has had the most observable impact on our society. More

The Faculty of Education is proud to announce that the Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre is open. The Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre meets learners where they are—online—with innovative learning tools, resources, strategies, and support. Helping to remediate education inequities the pandemic has highlighted, the Centre designs and places current learning tools and evidence-informed technological practices into the hands of communities often overlooked and underserved by online education. Raising Nisga’a Language, Cultural Sovereignty, and Land-based Education with Traditional Carving Knowledge

Noxs Ts’awit Dr. Amy Parent of the Wilp (House) Ni’isjoohl, Assistant Professor in the UBC Faculty of Education, is the Principal Investigator of the Raising Nisga’a Language, Cultural Sovereignty, and Land-based Education with Traditional Carving Knowledge (RNL) multi-year research project with her Nation. The RNL project began in 2020 to support ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nisga’a language, culture, and ways of life. More

Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Faculty of Education

Dayna McCracken is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who is “embedded” in the Faculty of Education and is specialized in helping Faculty of Education students. Dayna provides workshops and outreach support tailored specifically to the concerns that Faculty of Education students commonly experience. She can also meet students individually to find out more about their particular concerns, working collaboratively to make a wellness plan that is right for them. More


New Master of Education in Indigenous Education receives Ministerial Approval

UBC Faculty of Education will be home to British Columbia’s first Master of Education in Indigenous Education. The Faculty’s proposed Master of Education in Indigenous Education received approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. The program will be designed for educators, educational administrators and leaders, Indigenous community members, and other professionals in education settings who want in-depth preparation on K-12 Indigenous educational frameworks and community relationships that build upon Indigenous knowledge systems. More

Institute for Veterans Education and Transition helps bring hundreds of Afghan interpreters and their families to Canada

IVET has helped bring hundreds of Afghan interpreters who worked with the Canadian military, and their families, to Canada. IVET has also helped move hundreds of Canada’s Afghan allies to safe houses in Afghanistan, where they wait, hoping for Canadian government assistance. Watch The Fifth Estate’s documentary, Abandoned in Afghanistan: Canada’s Failed Promise, which shares the efforts of Tim Laidler and the community of Canadian veterans to bring former interpreters out of Afghanistan. New Open Online Course: Historical, Systemic and Intersectional Anti-racism: From Awareness to Action
