UBC Faculty of Education scholars, Dr. Margaret Macintyre Latta and Dr. Bill Cohen, received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Connection Grant with matching funds from the Faculty of Education Research Infrastructure Support Services (RISS) Grant to help develop a multi-day forum to support educators and researchers in decolonizing and indigenizing curriculum.
The SSHRC Connection Grant supports events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities, which can often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects, represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage with participants on research issues of value to them.
The Faculty of Education RISS Grant helps Education faculty pursue excellent research by supporting activities and expenses that are typically ineligible for support from research grants or for which stand-alone support is challenging. RISS grants support external grant matching, postdoctoral benefits, funds for pre-conference planning, matching for UBC’s SSHRC Bridge Funding Program and funds to support community engagement for early stage research project planning.
Working the Ideas: The Needed Practice Ground for Curricular Decolonization and Indigenization
SSHRC selected the project, entitled Working the Ideas: The Needed Practice Ground for Curricular Decolonization and Indigenization, for a Connection Grant.
The grant supported a multi-day forum where elders, educators, researchers, community partners and community members engaged in shared sense-making experiences oriented towards decolonizing and indigenizing efforts articulating challenges and opportunities.
Congratulations Dr. Macintyre Latta and Dr. Cohen on receiving a SSHRC Connection Grant and facilitating these vital forums for decolonizing and indigenizing curriculum.

The Vancouver Senate has approved a motion to designate Thursday, October 12, 2023 as a “Make-up Monday” for purposes of academic scheduling. Classes normally scheduled on Thursday, October 12 are cancelled, and will be replaced by the classes normally scheduled on a Monday.
During the 2023 calendar year, statutory holidays have created an imbalance in the numbers of days available for classes on each weekday, with Mondays disproportionately affected. Thursday, October 12 will be used to make up for the shortage of Mondays.
You can read the full details (pages 29-31) at https://senate.ubc.ca/files/REVISED-2023.04.19-SENATE-MEETING-MATERIALS.pdf.
Enrolment Services and Faculties will notify students by a variety of channels before course registration, at the start of Term 1, and leading up to October 12.
Courses cannot opt out of Make-up Monday. This is to ensure sufficient access to teaching spaces and so students can follow their Monday timetable.

Did you know that the Faculty of Education has more than 200 live websites with tens of thousands of webpages? It’s time to clean house.
Many of these websites haven’t been updated in years while others are active but contain outdated content that no longer aligns with the Faculty’s messaging, priorities or offerings, creating confusion and potential to harm our reputation.
Purpose of a website
A website is a public-facing communications channel containing the most current information. The UBC Records Management Office’s retention policy for website content is five years plus the current year. A website is not an archive.
Cleanup begins
The Office of the Dean is undertaking a website maintenance project that will remove outdated webpages from the Faculty of Education website. We will also be reaching out to owners of websites to confirm that the sites are still active and to assist in deactivating sites that are not.

Congratulations to Dr. Wendy Klassen on receiving Association of BC Deans of Education’s (ABCDE) Teacher Educator Award and Dr. Lee Gunderson on receiving the ABCDE Teacher Advocate Award.
The Teacher Educator Award recognizes educators at the school or university level who has distinguished themselves in partnering with a teacher education program in BC. The Education Advocate award is presented to educators who have distinguished themselves as an advocate for education.

Dr. Wendy Klassen
Director, Undergraduate Programs, Okanagan School of Education
Assistant Professor, Okanagan School of Education
Dr. Klassen has been teaching for more than 40 years, beginning her career in Richmond, BC in School District 38. For the last 25 years she has made an impact on the Okanagan campus—inspiring, supporting and mentoring hundreds of pre-service teachers, mentor teachers, graduate students and field advisors. In 2013, she became the Director of Undergraduate Programs and was integral in reimagining the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at UBC Okanagan. The BEd offers extensive field experiences and in-situ coursework, including more than 24 weeks of practical experience.
The success of these experiences can be attributed to Dr. Klassen’s commitment to developing and sustaining strong and collaborative partnerships. Dr. Klassen is also known for her teaching innovation, which involves teaching numeracy education classes in-situ at local elementary schools. Her learner-centered approach focuses on alleviating mathematics anxiety for teacher candidates, while they learn “about” teaching mathematics “through” teaching mathematics.

Dr. Lee Gunderson
Professor, Department of Language & Literacy Education
Dr. Gunderson has extensive experience in teaching various grades and subjects, as well as serving in administrative roles. At UBC, he has served as Head of two UBC Departments: Language and Literacy Education and Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to education and literacy such as the David Russell Award for research, the UBC Killam Teaching Prize and the Kingston Prize for contributions to the National Reading Conference (now LRA). He was recently in 2021 elected into the Reading Hall of Fame, an independent organization that recognizes lifetime achievements in the field of reading.
Dr. Gunderson has also been involved in various organizations related to literacy and education. He founded the BC ESL Assessment Consortium that has designed, developed, and normed 10 (Grade 2-12) English reading and one primary English oral assessment. His research focuses on the academic and language achievement of ESL and immigrant students, and he advocates against the use of deficit labels such as English as a second or foreign language (ESL) and English language learning (ELL).
The awards were announced during the ABCDE’s Teacher Education Round Table on April 27, 2023 at Thompson Rivers University.
